Canada Youth 2020 – POSTPONED

In conversation with Brock University, and to ensure that CY2020 is a joyful and successful gathering that can include as many people as possible, the difficult decision to postpone CY to July of 2021 has been made. Moving this event to next summer will allow congregations and planners time to work towards making CY2021 a joyful gathering of people from all across the country.

We are thrilled to announce that John W. Vest will be the Keynote Speaker for our Leadership Track!

John describes himself as a “church hacker” attempting to overcome the limitations of church as we know it. He is passionate about faith formation for emerging generations and is the co-founder of the Progressive Youth Ministry conference. An enthusiastic pitmaster, John has managed to unite church and BBQ, a dream he is making a reality with a food truck called Redemption BBQ and a new worshiping community called the Joyful Feast. John lives in Glen Allen, VA with his wife and two young sons.

John has served as the Visiting Assistant Professor of Evangelism at Union Presbyterian Seminary and worked with the Presbytery of the James in Richmond Virginia in the areas of evangelism, new church development, and church revitalization. Prior to his appointment at Union he served in congregational ministry for fifteen years in the Chicago metropolitan area. He holds degrees from Rice University (BA), the University of Chicago Divinity School (MDiv), and McCormick Theological Seminary (DMin), and has studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Since 2000, CY has been a gathering place for enthusiastic people to worship, play, create, pray, learn, make new friends, study scripture, laugh, discover, reflect, sing and share. More than 4,000 people have attended CY since it began and the impact has been felt in our camps, congregations, colleges and the courts of the church.

Seeing 20/20. There is a story in the Gospel of Mark about Jesus healing a blind man. Jesus uses all the usual methods of healing we find in other healing stories: touching, spitting, laying on hands. But when Jesus asks the man if he can see, the man says he can see people, but they look like trees that are uprooted and walking around. It’s surprising to think Jesus’ healing doesn’t quite work on the first try. But the story reminds us that none of us have 20/20 vision. Sometimes we look but do not see; we have knowledge but don’t understand; we want to live with hope, but our vision is clouded. In the story, Jesus lays his hands on the man’s eyes again and this time the man sees everything clearly. (Mark 8:25-28). We all want to see things rightly. We need (as it says in the Bible) “to have the eyes of our heart enlightened so that we may know hope” (Ephesians 1:18).
