This may be of interest...Did you ever wonder how to interpret symbols or words on a tombstone? Jewish tombstones are a treasure trove of information despite common problems that make it difficult to accurately translate and interpret their inscriptions. Using examples from Jewish tombstones in this presentation, Robin Meltzer will help us build skills to understand an inscription’s context, determine the accuracy of the information presented, understand Jewish naming conventions, recognize Kohen and Levite status and symbols, identify rabbinic status, interpret honorifics, and understand Hebrew calendar dates and abbreviations. The presentation also suggests best practices for on-site cemetery visits and tombstone photography.

It is a widespread Jewish custom to visit the graves of loved ones during the period leading up to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. In the spirit of this tradition, we have partnered with UJA Federation of Greater Toronto to host a meaningful Yizkor service at Pardes Chaim on September 24 at 11:00 AM. The service will be led by Rabbi Rafi Lipner, UJA’s Senior Fellow of Strategic Jewish Enrichment. Join us to hear inspiring words, recite Yizkor (the memorial prayer for the departed), and pay tribute to the memories of those we have lost. RSVP at this link: https://bit.ly/3Z2E2iU

More beautiful projects coming to life at THMP! This one, at Pardes Shalom, is a sculptural installation called “Flight” by Canadian artists Temma Gentles and William Roddy. Set against a backlit window, its layers of near transparency create a contemplative and healing aesthetic through silhouettes of birds in flight. Its thematic keynote is a phrase from the memorial prayer “El Malei Rachamim,” wishing for the souls of the dead to find peace in God’s nurturing presence. The artwork is now fully installed with added lighting. Like every project we undertake, its purpose is to honour the dead and support the bereaved in their healing.

Finding quiet spaces in nature helps the bereaved find peace and healing. The feeling of sunshine on the skin or the scene of a bird landing gently on water reminds us of our essential connection to nature and keeps us connected to the people we miss. For this reason, we are excited to share about our new reflection pond at Pardes Chaim Cemetery. It has many plantings, a shade canopy, multiple reflection nodes, and accessibility features. Visitors can stroll its perimeter walkway or sit on a bench and quietly remember. We encourage community members to use the reflection pond in ways that are healing and meaningful to them.
