Our own Howard Gaskin stopped by the church office on Thursday on the heels of his participation in the Boston Marathon. He came with his medal, which is actually quite heavy! Apparently, every runner who crosses the finish line receives one; Boston gives out 30,000 of them each year. Howard's medal wall must be occupying quite a bit of space, as he has been training and entering competitions for a number of years now. After starting out with half marathons, he decided to enter his first full marathon in Ottawa 2018, which he was able to finish. After that, he took on the Toronto Marathon to "prove it wasn't a fluke." Then came the big time: his first Boston Marathon in 2019.

Training and running in these events is a passion for Howard, in general, although he seems to have a particular fondness for the iconic Boston Marathon. He was full of enthusiasm as he described how the whole city gets involved. This year, he found the conditions even more challenging than usual. The heat - averaging about about 22 degrees - was giving runners of all ages considerable difficulty. Some participants had to be taken away in stretchers. Howard found himself cramping at one point. But he made it!

It will be a couple of weeks before Howard starts his training regimen again. He said it's important to heal after such a demanding amount of wear and tear on the body.

Congratulations Howard! You've earned a little down time.

We are excited to have four of Toronto’s finest jazz musicians with us in worship on Feb 18 to help open the season of Lent and celebrate Black History Month with music in a gospel and jazz vein. There will be special music from the choir and Music Director, Deborah Park, and from the Tom Reynolds Quartet, featuring Tom Reynolds on piano, Alexander Brown on trumpet, George Koller on bass, and Lorne Nehring on drums. Please join us for this memorable service, with well known songs from spiritual and gospel Black Church traditions, music by Duke Ellington and Oscar Peterson, and original compositions from Tom Reynolds.
