The Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Toronto (Eesti Evangeelne Luteriusu Kogudus Torontos), was formally established on August 3rd, 1948, in the hall of St. John’s on the 29th of August, 1948, by visiting Pastor Kiviranna with 170 Estonians in attendance. A second service was held five weeks later by Pastor Puhm, who became the congregation’s official pastor in October of 1948. John’s churc

h for the next seven years. As waves of immigrants arrived, the rooms of St. John’s became more and more crowded as the congregation grew by leaps and bounds. It was obvious that St. Peter’s congregation needed their own church. Fund raising began in earnest. By February 1953, a lot on the corner of Roehampton Avenue and Mt. Pleasant in Toronto had been purchased. The church building was completed about two years later. Dean Valter Viks blessed the newly-built church on September 25th, 1955. To accommodate everyone, there were three separate services, for a total of 2,500 attendees, including new congregation members and guests. Pastor Oskar Puhm wrote in 1958 that although the new church held 500 people, there have been as many as over a thousand in attendance during holiday services. Church halls were used by many organizations including Sunday School, the Estonian Supplementary School, Pre-Confirmation and Confirmation classes, scouts and guides. Peter’s church became known as a beehive of activity including celebrations, concerts, meetings, displays, coffee gatherings, and seminars. Records show that in 1958 the congregation had grown to approximately 4000 members. The birthrate of members exceeded deaths by seven-fold. Pastor Puhm wrote in 1958:

“It is with gladness in our hearts, that here on foreign soil we have been able to establish our own congregation and church in our mother-tongue. Stretching toward the heavens, this building is not only a religious temple, but also a national building – where all which is familiar, holy and dear to us, we may teach and inherit to our children.

Laupäeval, 6. juunil toimus Toronto Peetri koguduse aastakoosolek.

Toronto ,,Doors Open“ avas uksed Peetri kirikus

Laupäeval esines Peetri kirikus Toronto Eesti Meeskoor, kellel tuleb samas kontsert 13. juunil. Koori dirigeerib alates septembrikuust Erik Kreem, kes avatud uste päeval esines kirikus ka orelikontserdiga.

Doors Open continued - On Sunday, guests could take part in the musical services presented by the Salvation Army and the Toronto Korean Open Church. In the Guild Room, visitors were introduced to Estonia through a video presentation, with the space transformed into a small cinema.

Visiting on Sunday also were several members of the Estonian Parliamentary Friendship Group delegation including Chairman Mr. Peeter Tali, parliamentary member Tarmo Tamm and staff member Andreas-Ra Adoson.

Chairwoman Aida Shelton kept the volunteers and singers happy and well fed. A great thank you to all the organizers and volunteers whose hard work helped make this year’s event another great success.

A cool and rainy day greeted those who ventured out to explore Toronto’s unique buildings and landmarks during this year’s Doors Open weekend, discovering the people, places, and stories that make our city a true global mosaic. Nearly 170 sites participated this year, and St. Peter’s was once again delighted to be part of the event.
Celebrating this year’s theme, “The World in a City,” visitors to the church were able to admire the beauty of our building, enjoy performances by the Toronto Estonian Men’s Choir, attend an organ concert by Erik Kreem, and meet stained glass artist Ernestine Tahedl. There's still time to visit on Sunday! Photos by Thomas Arget & Anne Keelmann
