After 9/11, The Salvation Army spent months at Ground Zero in New York City, providing meals and physical and spiritual care to rescue and recovery workers. Teams from the Canada and Bermuda Territory joined the effort and among them was Lt-Colonel Lynda Watt, who offered support as a chaplain and volunteer. Salvationists and friends gathered at Pine Lake Camp in Alberta this past weekend for the 2026 Celebration of Culture. A partnership between The Salvation Army and Indigenous Pathways, the event was a time of listening, learning, growth, healing and celebration.

Conversations and stories were spoken around sharing circles, through song and dance at the Saturday afternoon pow wow, and around an evening campfire. See highlights from the weekend in the photos below, and watch for a full report coming soon to Salvationist.ca.

Today, Historica Canada has released a Heritage Minute highlighting the extraordinary response of Gander, N.L., following the events of September 11, 2001.

As thousands of airline passengers were unexpectedly diverted to the community, local residents, organizations, and volunteers came together to provide comfort and care. The Salvation Army played an important role in the response, helping to register displaced travellers, serving meals, offering emotional and spiritual care, and opening its doors to those in need.
