HLM MEANINGFUL LIFE DEVOTIONAL

Day 5: *Enter His Gates with Thanksgiving*

The psalmist calls God’s people to a lifestyle of gratitude. He tells them to enter God’s gates with thanksgiving. He says to come into God’s courts with praise. This is how we approach a holy God.

We are to give thanks to Him and bless His name. The reason is rooted in God’s eternal character. The Lord is good. His steadfast love endures forever. His faithfulness continues to all generations.

You do not need to wait for a perfect life to practice this. You can enter His presence today with thankfulness. This posture acknowledges that God is good, even when your day is hard. Will you choose to bless God’s name today, regardless of your circumstances?

Psalm 100:1-2, 4-5  (ESV)  *Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing! Know that the Lord, he is God! Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name! For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.*

*Prayer:* Thank God for three specific blessings from your day before you make any requests.

*Challenge:* Set a phone alarm for three different times today to pause and verbally thank God for something.

HLM MEANINGFUL LIFE DEVOTIONAL

Day 4: *The Thief’s Promise of Paradise*

Two criminals were crucified beside Jesus. One of them hurled insults. The other acknowledged his own guilt and Jesus’ innocence. He turned to Jesus and said, “Remember me.” He had nothing to offer but his faith and his request.

Jesus did not scold him for his past. Jesus gave him a future. He said, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” This man received grace in his final moments. His story is a powerful reason for thanksgiving. The cross transforms thanksgiving from polite ritual to gasp of grace, where even life’s final moments can become the gateway to paradise.

Your hope is not that you have never failed. Your hope is that Jesus Christ is a sufficient Saviour. You can come to Him with your regrets and receive mercy. What guilt or failure do you need to bring to Jesus today?

Luke 23:42–43 (ESV). *And he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in paradise.”*

*Reflection:* How does the thief’s sudden salvation reshape your view of God’s mercy? Who needs to hear your “death-row testimony” this week?

*Prayer:* Thank Jesus specifically for His mercy that covers your past and secures your future.

*Challenge:* Confess one specific failure to God and receive His forgiveness, writing down the date as a reminder of His grace.

HLM MEANINGFUL LIFE DEVOTIONAL

Day 3: *The Boy’s Loaves and Fish*

A large crowd followed Jesus. They were hungry. A boy had five barley loaves and two fish. It was a small lunch for a massive need. The boy gave his small portion to Jesus. The boy’s lunch seemed meager – until given. Thanksgiving fuels generosity when we stop measuring our “not enough” and start trusting the multiplier of hands.

Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them. Everyone ate as much as they wanted. The boy’s thankful offering, placed in Jesus’ hands, became more than enough. His gratitude activated generosity and God used it to meet a great need.

You may feel your resources are too small to make a difference. Your time, money, or energy seems insignificant. Thanksgiving asks not what you lack, but what you have to give. How can you offer what you have to Jesus today?

John 6:9, 11 (ESV). *“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated.*

*Reflection:* What “small offering” have you withheld as insignificant? How might releasing it today feed someone’s hunger?

*Prayer:* Ask God to show you one specific way you can use what you have to bless someone else.

*Challenge:* Use a small resource you have; a text, a coffee, an hour of time, to intentionally serve one person.

HLM MEANINGFUL LIFE DEVOTIONAL

Day 2: *Rejoicing Without a Harvest*

The prophet Habakkuk looked at his circumstances and saw failure. The fig tree did not blossom. There was no fruit on the vines. The olive crop failed. The fields produced no food. The flock was cut off. The herd was gone from the stalls.

Yet Habakkuk made a decision. He said, “I will rejoice in the Lord.” His joy was not in his harvest. His joy was in his God. His gratitude was rooted in his relationship with the Lord, not in his provision. This gratitude isn’t denial of drought, but recognition that the Gardener matters more than the garden. Our worship roots deeper when life’s soil cracks.

Many of us tie our thankfulness to our abundance. When our resources are low, our praise often stops. Habakkuk shows us a more mature faith. It trusts God’s character when His gifts are hard to see. Where in your life are you waiting for a harvest that has not yet come?

Habakkuk 3:17–18 (ESV). *Though the fig tree should not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will take joy in the God of my salvation.*

*Reflection:* Where has life’s “harvest” disappointed you? How might thanking God for His grip on your hand renew strength to climb?

*Prayer:* Thank God for who He is, your salvation and your strength, regardless of what you see around you.

*Challenge:* Write down three things about God’s character that never change, even when your circumstances do.

HLM MEANINGFUL LIFE DEVOTIONAL

Day 1: *Midnight Praise in Chains*

When shackles bite wrists and prison walls press close, worship becomes warfare.  Paul and Silas were beaten and thrown into prison. Their feet were fastened in stocks. In that dark and painful place, they chose to pray and sing hymns to God. They chose hymns over complaints at midnight, their chains clinking to the rhythm of faith. The other prisoners listened to them.

Their worship did not mean their suffering was good. It meant their circumstances did not silence their faith. They declared that God was still worthy of praise, even from a prison cell. Their gratitude was a powerful act of trust.

You may be in a situation that feels like a prison. It could be a financial strain, a health concern, or a relational conflict. You do not have to call it good. But you can choose to direct your heart toward God in the middle of it. What difficult circumstance are you facing where you can still choose to thank God?

Acts 16:25 (NKJV)  *But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.*

*Reflection:* What chains of circumstance threaten to mute your praise today? How might declaring God’s faithfulness shift your perspective from prisoner to witness?

*Prayer:* Ask God for the strength to worship Him even when your situation is painful.

*Challenge:* Identify one specific worry today and choose to sing a hymn or worship song in its place.

HLM MEANINGFUL LIFE DEVOTIONAL

Day 5: *Seeking the Peace of Your City*

The prophet Jeremiah wrote to the Israelites living in exile in Babylon. They were strangers in a foreign land. God’s instruction to them was surprising. He did not tell them to withdraw or simply endure. He commanded them to seek the peace and prosperity of the city where they lived. They were to pray to the Lord for it, because their own welfare was tied to its welfare.

Our gratitude must extend beyond our personal lives. We are called to thank God for our nation and our community. This involves praying for those in authority and actively seeking the good of our cities. It means supporting those who serve and helping the vulnerable. Thanksgiving moves us from private blessing to public service.

Your community is your place of exile and your place of calling. You can thank God for it by praying for its leaders and its peace. You can thank Him by being a good neighbor. How can you actively seek the peace and prosperity of your city this week?

Jeremiah 29:7 (ESV). *But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.*

*Prayer:* Pray for your mayor, city councillors, and local community leaders by name, asking God to grant them wisdom.

*Challenge:* Identify one local community organization that serves the vulnerable and visit their website to learn how to support them.
