(WUDASSE MARYAM) THE PRAISE OF OUR LADY, THE VIRGIN MARY, THE BEARER OF GOD, WHICH IS TO BE READ ON THE SIXTH DAY, FRIDAY (ARB)

Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb. O Mary, Virgin, God-bearer, without blemish. From you, the Sun of righteousness has risen for us and drawn us near; under his wings, for He has created us. Pray to Him for us O Holy One.

O Our Mother, God-bearer, Mother of Light, you we exalt with glory and praise. You are blessed, greater than the heavens and glorified from the earth and above all conscience. Who is able to declare your greatness? And none can be compared with you. O Mary, angels exalt you and the Seraphim glorify you because He who sits upon Cherubim and Seraphim, came and dwelt within your womb. The love of mankind drew us to Himself. The death which was with us, He removed; the life which was with him, He gave to us. To Him belong glory and praise. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One.

Blessed are you Mary and blessed is the fruit of your womb. O Virgin, God-bearer, the glory of virgins. He who existed before the world, became incarnate within you. The Ancient of times, came out from your womb and took our flesh. And He gave us His Holy Spirit and made us chosen like Him through his abundant goodness. You are greater than many women who have received grace and honour. O Mary, God-bearer, the spiritual city, upon you, dwelt the most-high God. He who sits upon Cherubim and Seraphim, with your hand your grasped. And He who feeds all flesh through His abundant goodness has taken your breast and sucked milk. He is our God and Saviour. He will shepherd us all for ever. Let us worship and praise Him because he created us. Pray to Him for us O Holy One.

Mary the virgin is the vessel of priceless ointment, the spring of the water of life. The fruit of her womb saved the whole world and abolished from us the curse. He made peace between us through His cross and His holy resurrection. He has returned mankind back into paradise. Pray to Him for us O Holy One..

Mary, pure virgin, believed-upon God-bearer, asks for compassion for the children of mankind. Ask for us, to Christ, your son so that He may forgive our sins. Pray to Him for us O Holy One.

Mary the virgin cried out in the temple and said “God knows that I know no one and nothing other than the sound of the voice of the angel, who brought me glad-tidings with honour and said to me “Peace be to you, O Holy virgin. You will carry that which cannot be carried, contain that which cannot be contained”. Your praise is abundant. O full of grace in all respects, you became the dwelling-place of the Word of the Father. You are the extensive curtain which gathers the believers, the Christians, and instructs them to worship the life-giving Trinity. You are the one who brought-forth the pillar of fire which Moses saw, which is the Son of God who came and dwelt within your womb. You became the ark of the Creator of heaven and earth; you carried Him for 9 months in your womb. You were believed upon by He who heaven and earth cannot contain. You became the ladder for the ascent into heaven. Your light is greater than the light of the sun. You are east from where the brilliant star came out of. Saints look upon you with joy and gladness. He decreed upon Eve “Bring forth in pain and suffering”. But you Mary heard the saying “Rejoice, O full of grace. You have brought forth for us, the King, Lord of all creation”, who came and saved us. He is compassionate and the Lover of men. Because of this, we praise you, as Gabriel the angel saying “blessed are you Mary and blessed is the fruit of your womb. Rejoice, O full of grace, God is with you.”

Pray to Him for us O Holy One.

BLESSED ART THOU AMONG WOMEN AND BLESSED IS THE FRUIT OF YOUR WOMB FOREVER AND EVER.

(WUDASSE MARYAM) THE PRAISE OF OUR LADY, THE VIRGIN MARY, THE BEARER OF GOD, WHICH IS TO BE READ ON THE FIFTH DAY, THURSDAY (HAMUS)

The Bush which Moses saw in flaming fire in the desert, the wood of which was not consumed, is a similitude of Mary, the Virgin who was spotless. The Word of the Father became incarnate of Her, and the fire of His Godhead did not consume the Virgin, and after She had brought Him forth Her virginity was maintained, and His Godhead was unchanged. Our God, Who verily is God, became a man; He came and delivered us. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

We all magnify Thee, O Our Lady, the God-Bearer, that Thy compassion may be over us all. The Virgin Mary, the God-Bearer, hath become the object of the boast of all of us, because through Her was destroyed the curse of olden time, which rested upon our race, through the wickedness which the woman committed when she ate of the tree. Through Eve was the door of the Garden shut fast, and because of Mary the Virgin it hath opened to us again. It is allotted to us to eat of the Tree of Life, that is to say the Body of Christ and His precious Blood. Because of His love for us He came and delivered us. What understanding, what language, and what hearing is able to comprehend this mystery, which must be proclaimed to be wonderful, “God is the lover of men?” One is He Alone, the Word of the Father, who existed before the world in His incorruptible Godhead, from One, the Father. The Only-Begotten Son came and was incarnate of the holy woman, His mother, and after She brought Him forth Her virginity perished not, and because of this it became manifest that She was the Bearer of God. O deep is the richness of the wisdom of God! The womb which He decreed should bring forth children in pain, and suffering, and sorrow of heart, had become the fountain of life, and has brought forth without the seed of man Him who removed the curse from our race. And for this reason we will praise Him, saying, “Glory be Unto Thee, O Thou, Lover of men, the Redeemer of our souls.” Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

O how wonderful and mighty in power was the womb of the Virgin, which brought forth God without seed! And of this the angel who appeared unto Joseph was a witness when he spoke, saying, “That which shall be born of Her is of the Holy Spirit.” It was the Word of God Who became incarnate without change. Mary brought Him forth a second time. And Gabriel said unto Her, “Thou shall bring forth a Son, and shall call His Name Emmanuel, which is, being interpreted, God with us. And moreover, he shall be called Jesus, Who shall save His people from their sins.” And may He save us also by His power, and forgive our sins, because we have known in truth that He is the God Who became man. Praise be unto Him forever. O how wonderful is the birth of God by Mary, the Holy Virgin! She completed the Word of the Father; seed did not proceed His Birth, and Her virginity was not destroyed by His Birth. The Word went forth from the Father without weariness and was born of the Virgin without suffering or pain. The wise men worshipped Him, and brought unto Him incense because He was God, and gold because He was King, and myrrh, which was given for His death which gave life unto men. And for our sakes He accepted death of His own free will. He alone is the Good Being and the Lover of men. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

O how wonderful! He took a rib from the side of Adam, and fashioned from it a woman, and the whole creation of the children of men was given to God, the Word of the Father, Who was incarnate of the Holy Virgin, and is called Emmanuel. And because of this we beseech Her at all times to strive on our behalf with Her beloved Son for the forgiveness of our sins. She was beneficent towards all the saints and high priests, for she brought to them that for which they waited, and she brought to the prophets Him concerning Whom they had prophesied, and she brought forth to the Apostles Him in Whose Name they were to preach in all the ends of the world, and from Her went forth for the martyrs and believers Him for whom they were to fight, Jesus Christ. The richness of the grace of His wisdom cannot be fathomed. We will seek after the greatness of His compassion, for He came and delivered us. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

God swore unto David in righteousness and He will not repent, “Of the fruit of thy belly I will seat upon thy throne.” And when that righteous man received it from Him, that Christ should be born of him in the flesh, he wished to seek out and prepare a dwelling place for God, the Word of the Father. And He completed it with great effort and then He cried out in the Holy Spirit and said, “Behold, we have heard it in Ephrata and the dwelling place of the God of Jacob, which is Bethlehem, in which Emmanuel hath chosen to be born in the flesh for our salvation.” And also another of the prophets has said it: “And as for you, O Bethlehem of the land of Ephrata, you shall not be the least of the king of Judah, for from you shall go forth a king Who shall rule My people Israel.” O how wonderful is the word of those who prophesied concerning Christ in one Spirit, to Whom be glory together with His Good Father and The Holy Spirit, henceforth and forever. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

David who reigned over Israel, wished to drink water of the pool of Bethlehem, whereupon straightway the captains of his hosts rose up, and waged war in the camp of the rebels, and brought unto him that water which he wished to drink. And when the righteous man saw that they had willingly delivered themselves over to slaughter for his sake, he poured out the water unto the Lord and he did not drink of it. And then righteousness was accounted unto him forever. And verily in like manner have martyrs rejected the desire of this world, and poured out their blood for God, and have endured bitter deaths for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. Have compassion upon us according to the greatness of Thy compassion. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

One of the Holy Trinity saw our low state, bowed the heaven of heavens, came and dwelt in the womb of the Virgin, and became a man like unto us, with the exception of sin alone. And He was born in Bethlehem, according to what the Prophets preached, He delivered us, and redeemed us and made us His own people forever and ever. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

WE ALL MAGNIFY THEE, O OUR LADY, THE GOD-BEARER, THAT THY COMPASSION MAY BE OVER US ALL.

(WUDASSE MARYAM)THE PRAISE OF OUR LADY, THE VIRGIN MARY, THE BEARER OF GOD, WHICH IS TO BE READ ON THE FOURTH DAY, WEDNESDAY.

All the Hosts of Heaven say, Blessed are Thou, O Thou second heaven upon the earth, Door of the sunrise (Or the East), Mary the Virgin, Thou pure Bride chamber of the Holy Bridegroom. The Father looked down from heaven, and found none like unto Thee; He sent His Only Son, and He became incarnate of Thee. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

All generations shall ascribe blessings unto Thee, Thou who alone are Our Lady, the Bearer of God. Great and wonderful things have the Prophets prophesied concerning Thee, O City of God, for Thou are the abode of all those who rejoice. All the kings of the earth walk in Thy light and all the nations in Thy splendor. O Mary, all generations shall ascribe blessings unto Thee, and shall magnify Him. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Thou are in very truth the Cloud, and Thou have shown us the water of the rain, the sign of the Only Begotten. The Father established Thee, the Holy Spirit took up His abode on Thee, and the power of the Most High overshadowed Thee, O Mary, and verily Thou did bring forth the Word, the Son of God, who endures forever. He came and has delivered us from sin. Great was the honor that was bestowed upon Thee, O Gabriel, the Angel of Annunciation with the joyful face. Thou did proclaim unto us the birth of the Lord, Who has come to us, and Thou did announce Him to Mary, the spotless Virgin, and did say unto Her, “Rejoice Thou, O Thou who are full of grace, God is with Thee.” Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Thou did find grace, the Holy Spirit dwelt upon Thee, and the power of the Most High overshadowed Thee, O Mary. Verily Thou did bring forth the Holy Savior for all the world. He came and He hath delivered us. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Our tongue this day praises the work of the Virgin. We praise Mary, the God Bearer, because our Lord and Redeemer Jesus Christ was born of Her in the city of David. Come, O all ye nations, and let us ascribe blessing unto Mary, for She is at once Mother and Virgin. Rejoice, O Pure Virgin, in whom there is no blemish, to whom came the Word of the Father, Who was incarnate of Her. Rejoice, O Vessel unblemished, perfect and spotless woman. Rejoice Thou, O Garden endowed with reason, thou Abode of Christ, Who became the second Adam because of the first Adam, the man. Rejoice Thou, O woman who bore the Only Begotten, Who, was not separated from the Bosom of His Father, Rejoice, O Thou pure Bride-Chamber who is adorned with all the beauty of praise, He came and was incarnate of Thee. Rejoice, O Thorn-bush, who was not consumed by the Fire of the Godhead. Rejoice Thou, O Mother and Maid, Virgin, Thou Heaven of the Heavenly, who did carry in Thy body Him who is borne aloft by the Cherubim and Seraphim. And because of this we rejoice, and we sing with the Holy Angels with joy and gladness and we say, “Glory to God in the heavens, and peace upon earth, His good will to men.” And He is ever well pleased with Thee. For He unto whom belongs glory and praise. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

The glory of Mary is greater than that of all the saints, for She was worthy to receive the Word of the Father. Him who makes the Angels to be afraid, Him Whom the Watching Angels in Heaven praise, did Mary the Virgin carry in Her Womb. She is greater than the Cherubim and superior to the Seraphim, for She is an Ark (Or Tabernacle) of One of the Holy Trinity. She is Jerusalem, the City of the Prophets, and She is the habitation of the joy of all the Saints. On the people who sat in darkness and shadow of death has a great light risen. God who rests in His holiness became incarnate of a Virgin for our salvation. Come ye and look upon this marvelous thing, sing ye His song because of the mystery that has been revealed unto us. For He who was without flesh became a man, The Word mingled with Our nature, He who had no beginning assumed a beginning for Himself, and He who had no days reckoned to Himself days, and He who could not be known became revealed, and He who was invisible showed Himself; the Son of the Living God became a man indeed, Jesus Christ, yesterday, today, and forever, One Nature, Him do we worship and praise. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Ezekiel the Prophet testified concerning Her and said, “I see a sealed door in the East, sealed with a great and wonderful seal, and no one has gone in through except the God of the mighty ones. He went in and He came out.” Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

This door is the Virgin who brought Him forth, and She remained in Her virginity after She had brought Him forth. Blessed is the Fruit of Thy Womb, O God-Bearer, who came and delivered us out of the hand of the enemy who was merciless. Complete are thou and Blessed; Thou has found grace with the King of Glory, the God in truth. Majesty and Glory belong to Thee more than to all those who dwell upon the earth. The Word of the Father came and was incarnate of Thee, and walked about with men, for He is compassionate and a lover of men. He delivered our souls by His Holy coming. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

ALL GENERATIONS SHALL ASCRIBE BLESSINGS UNTO THEE, THOU WHO ALONE ARE OUR LADY, THE BEARER OF GOD.

✥ In the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. One God. Amen ✥

(Wudasse Maryam) The Praise of Our Lady, the Virgin Mary, the Bearer of God, which is to be read on the third day, Tuesday.

The Crown of our Glory, and the origin of our salvation and the foundation of our sanctification came into being in Mary the Virgin, who brought for us God the Word, who became incarnate for our salvation. And after He became man of certainty He was perfect God. And for this reason She gave birth to Him being a virgin. The power of Her bringing forth is a marvelous thing that cannot be described. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Of His own free will, and by the good pleasure of His Father and the Holy Spirit, He came forth and has delivered us. Great is the praise of Thy Virginity, O Mary, Thou perfect (or absolute) Virgin. Thou did receive grace, God was with Thee. You are the ladder which Jacob saw reaching from earth to heaven, with the angels of God ascending and descending upon it. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Thou are the Bush which Moses saw blazing with fire, and the wood thereof was not consumed. It was the Son of God Who dwelt in Thy womb, and the fire of His divinity did not consume Thy flesh. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Thou are that field wherein no seed was sown, and yet there went forth from Thee the Fruit of Life. Thou are that Treasure-house which Joseph bought, and he found therein a Pearl, a precious gem, that is to say, Our Redeemer Jesus Christ. Thou did carry it (Him) in Thy womb and did bring Him forth into the world. . Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Rejoice Thou, O God-bearer, Thou joy of the angels. Rejoice Thou, O Pure, who was the woman foretold by the prophets. Rejoice Thou for Thou did find favor, and God was with Thee. Rejoice Thou, for Thou have received the voice of the Angel (Gabriel), the joy of the entire world. Rejoice Thou, O Bearer of the Creator of the entire world. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Rejoice Thou because it is meet that Thou should be called, “Bearer of God.” Rejoice Thou, O Thou Woman who delivered Eve. Rejoice Thou, for Thou did suckle Him Who suckles all creation. Rejoice Thou, O Holy woman, the mother of all living beings. We lift our eyes to Thee with entreaty that Thou will pray on our behalf. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

O Virgin, O Saint, O Bearer of God, since Thou did bring forth the King, a marvelous mystery dwelt upon Thee for our salvation. We will hold our peace, for we are unable to search into the matter completely, as the Greatness thereof requires, and will describe that Doer of good things, through the exceedingly great wonder of the manifestation. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

He was the Living Word of the Father Who came down on Mount Sinai, and gave the Law to Moses while the top of the mountain was covered with mist, and with smoke, and with darkness, and with storm, and with terrifying blasts of trumpets. He admonished those who were standing there in fear. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

It was He Who came down to Thee, O rational Mountain, in the humility of the Lover of men. Without any change He became incarnate of Thee, and took a perfect body, endowed with reason and like unto ourselves, through the spirit of wisdom. God took up His abode in Her and became perfect man, so that He might deliver Adam, and forgive him his sin, and make him to dwell in heaven, and bring him back to his former state in His abundant compassion. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

It is Impossible for any to describe the greatness of the Virgin. For God chose Her, and He came and dwelt upon Her. He who dwelt in the Light, Whom none could approach, He was carried in Her womb nine months. He who is invisible, He Who is incomprehensible did Mary bring forth, being a virgin. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

This the stone which Daniel the Prophet saw, which was hewn from a high mountain, without hands, that is to say, the Word Who went forth from the Father. He came and became incarnate of the Virgin, without seed of man, and delivered us. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Thou are the pure twig and the right vessel of the True Faith of the Saints our fathers. O Thou pure God-Bearer, O Thou sealed Virgin, Thou did bring forth for us the Word of the Father, Jesus Christ. He came and He has delivered us. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!
Thou are the Mother of the glorious Light, O God-Bearer. Thou did carry the Word Who is invincible, and after Thou had brought Him forth Thou did continue to be a Virgin. With praise and blessing shall men magnify Thee! Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

What tongue is able to proclaim that which should be declared concerning Thee, O Thou Pure Virgin? Mother of the Light, the Word of the Father. Thou were the throne of the King whom the Cherubim carry. We ascribe blessings unto Thee, O Blessed woman, and we will remember Thy name from generation to generation. O Beautiful Dove, Mother of our Lord Jesus Christ. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

Rejoice Thou, O Mary, Mother and Maid, for unto Him who is in Thy Bosom, the angels bring praises, and the cherubim bow down and worship Him in fear, and the Seraphim spread out their wings, and say concerning Him ceaselessly, “This is the King of Glory.” He came to forgive the sins of the world in the greatness of His compassion. Pray to Him for us, O Holy One!

OF HIS OWN FREE WILL, AND BY THE GOOD PLEASURE OF HIS FATHER AND OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, HE CAME FORTH AND REDEEMED US.

In The Name of The Father and The Son And The Holy Spirit, One God. Amen.

On this day our Lord Jesus Christ came to the land of Egypt, and He was a child whose days were two years, even as the Holy Gospel saith. And the angel of God appeared unto Joseph in a dream, saying, “Rise up, take the child and His mother, and depart to the land of Egypt and remain there until I tell thee.” And the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ took place for two reasons, in the operation of His wisdom, firstly: If Herod, the infidel, found Him, and was able to kill Him, others would think that His Incarnation was from below; and secondly: That the men of the land of Egypt might not be deprived of His grace, and of His going about in their midst, and that He might smash the idols which were in the land of Egypt, and that the prophecy of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled which said, “Behold, God shall mount upon a swift (or, light) cloud, and shall come to the land of Egypt, and the idols of Egypt shall fall down” (Isaiah xix, I). Our Lord, in the operation of His wisdom, fled before Herod, but it was not through fear that He fled. And the first city at which Joseph, and our holy Lady, the Virgin Mary, the God -bearer, and our Lord Jesus Christ , and Salome, whose name was “Balata,” arrived, would not receive them. And they dug there a well of water, and it became a means of healing, not only to the men of that city, but also to all other men. Thence they departed to the monastery of Gamnudi, and they crossed the river towards the west. And the Lord put His foot upon a stone, and the mark of the sole of His foot is in the stone to this day, and the name of that place is called “the place of the sole of the foot of the Lord Jesus.” And our Lord said unto His mother, the holy Lady, the Virgin Mary, “Know thou, O Mary, my mother, that in this place a church shall be built in thy name and in mine. And I will make manifest therein signs and wonders, until the end of the world, and it shall be called ‘Debre Mitmak.’” Thence they departed towards the river, and crossed over towards the west, and He saw the desert of Scete from afar, and our Lord Jesus Christ blessed it, and He said unto His mother, “Know, O my mother Mary, that in this desert there shall live many monks, and ascetics, and spiritual fighters, and they shall serve God like the angels.” Thence He came to Debre Mesrak. And there was a staff in the hand of Joseph, wherewith he used to smite (?) our Lord Jesus Christ , and Joseph gave Him the staff. And when He took it He said unto His mother, “We will tarry here”; and that place and its desert, and the well of water, which is the first there, became known as Matareya (Near Heliopolis). And our Lord took Joseph’s staff, and broke it into little pieces and planted these pieces in that place, and He dug with His own divine hands a well, and there flowed from it sweet water, which had an exceedingly sweet odor. And our Lord took some of the water in His hands, and watered therewith the pieces of wood which He had planted, and straightway they took root, and put forth leaves, and an exceedingly sweet perfume was emitted by them, which was sweeter than any other perfume. And these pieces of wood grew and increased and they called them “Balsan” (i.e. the balsam trees). And our Lord Jesus Christ said unto His mother, the holy Virgin Mary, “O my mother, these Balsan, which I have planted, shall abide here for ever, and from them shall be taken the oil for Christian baptism, when they baptized in the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Thence they went to the city of Behensa, and to a place, which is called Bet Iyasus, which is interpreted “House of Jesus”; and our Lord Jesus Christ dug there a well whereof the water cured every sickness and every pain. And He also set a sign in a certain well of the river of Egypt, which rose in flood every year. At the time of prayer at which they offered up incense at mid-day to God by that well, as soon as the reading of the Gospel was ended the water which was in the well would rise up and come to the mouth of the well; and they used to receive a blessing from it, and straightway the water would recede until it reached its former level; and the people used to measure by the cubit the height to which it rose above its normal level at the bottom of the well. If the height were twenty cubits, there would be great abundance in the land of Egypt that year; if the height were eighteen or seventeen cubits, there would also be abundance, but if the height were only sixteen cubits there would be a great famine throughout the land of Egypt. And then they went to ‘Eshmunayn, and our Lord broke the idols which were therein; and they dwelt there for a few days with a man whose name was ‘Apelon. And there were there some komol trees, and they bowed their heads before our Lord Jesus Christ , and they have remained bent until this day. Thence they went to Debre Kuskuam, and they remained therein for six months, and our Lord placed a well therein, the water of which healed every sickness. And when our Lord had finished living in the land of Egypt the days which He wanted to live there, that is to say, three years and six months, and Herod was dead, the angel of the Lord appeared unto Joseph in a dream, and again he spoke to him, saying, “Rise up and take the Child, and His mother, and depart to the land of Israel.” When they returned from that place, they came to the city of Mahareka; and having come to Mesr (Cairo), they dwelt in the cave, which is the church of Saint Sergius in Mesr (Cairo). After this they went out from Mesr (Cairo) and came to Matariyah, and they bathed there, and the well therein which our Lord Jesus Christ made became holy and blessed from that hour, even as has already been said. And thence went forth the oil “Balasan,” the plants of which our Lord planted, and with this oil Christian baptism is made perfect, and with it churches and altars, and sacred property are consecrated. And with it they give relief and healing to all those who are sick, and they present it as a gift to kings, who boast themselves of its possession. And from this place they went to Mehdab. And by His return was fulfilled the prophecy of Hosea the prophet, saying, “Out of Egypt have I called My Son” (Hosea 11:1). And it is meet to us to celebrate a spiritual festival on this day, and we should sing on it the words of David the prophet, “ God hath wrought signs in the land of Egypt, and wonders in the Field of Zoan” (Psalm 78:12). And also, “He hath wrought in thee the signs of Egypt, and in the Egyptians,” and with them. “Glory be to God our Lord Jesus Christ , and to this Good Father, and to the Holy Life-giving Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.” Salutation to Thy coming to the land of Egypt.

And on this day also died Habakkuk, the prophet, one of the Twelve Sons of the Minor Prophets. One day this prophet cooked some lentils in a pot, and as he was carrying the pot, with some bread, to the men who were reaping in the fields outside the city, the angel of God appeared unto him, and said unto him, “Take this food to Daniel the prophet in the den of lions of the city of Babylon.” And Habbakkuk said unto him, “I have not seen Babylon and I do not know the den therein.” And the angel of God seized him by the hair of his head, as he was carrying the food, and brought him to the pit of the city of Babylon, which was shut, and he gave that food to Daniel and he ate; and immediately the angel of God brought him back to the land of Judah. Now he was a very old man. When the children of Israel returned from captivity, and built the sanctuary, Habakkuk came to Jerusalem, and they welcomed him with great joy, and they made the sanctuary beautiful and assembled to hear his prophecy. And he opened his mouth in the Holy Spirit and said, “O God , I heard the sound of Thee and I was afraid. I saw Thy work and I marveled.” And then he spoke in his prophecy concerning the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ . And concerning His birth in Bethlehem of Judah, he saith, “ God shall come from Mount Faran”; and then he continued his prophecy to the end and he wrote it and he mixed it with the prophecy of the prophets. And he dwelt in Jerusalem. And a certain woman of the sons of Israel came unto him weeping, and she said unto him, “I had two sons, and certain men required of them to worship idols, and they refused to do so, and the men killed them and cast their bodies out on the highway.” And Habakkuk went forth with her to the place where the young men who had been killed were lying, and he besought God to give them back their souls; and God accepted his prayer, and made the two young men to live again. When the time drew nigh for him to die he called his kinsfolk, and told them that he was going to die. And he continued to gaze upwards for the space of an hour, and behold a great arm, like the hand and arm of a man, opened the roof of the house, and came down from above, and reached itself out to his mouth, and took his soul. And when Anastasius, the Christian emperor, read the story of the strife of Habakkuk, he built a church in his honor in the city of Kartas, in the north of Egypt, and it was consecrated as on this day. Salutation to Habakkuk.

And on this day also the blessed and chosen fighter Abba Abkuelta became a martyr. This saint belonged to a noble family of the city of ‘Ensena, and he was a pure priest and a wise physician, and he did great good to all the suffering folk who came unto him, and he healed them without payment; moreover he also gave them food, and drink, and raiment, and anything of which they stood in need. In those days Diocletian, the infidel emperor, sent orders into the region of Upper Egypt, to the governor whose name was Arianus that he was to compel the men of that country to worship idols. Thereupon they took this saint and carried him away from ‘Ensena to the city of ‘Eshmunayn, and set him before the governor. And the governor spoke unto him with words of gentleness, in order to persuade him to abandon the True Faith, but he count not make him do so. And straightway the governor ordered his soldiers to torture him with divers kinds of tortures, and they did so, until his skin melted, and then they burnt him alive in the fire; thus he finished his martyrdom on the twenty-fourth day of the month of Genbot. And certain believers came, and swathed him for burial in costly cloths, and they buried him in one of the upper hills near his city. Salutation to Abba ‘Abkuelta.

And on this day also took place the death of Eleazar, the priest, the son of Aaron. And on this day also are commemorated ‘Akledis (Clitas), and Teflas, and Da’ala Maryu.

Glory be to God Who is glorified in His Saints. Amen.

O Lord, as You favored the poor widow's mite over the rich man's plenty, accept my humble thanks. Holy prophets, apostles, martyrs, and angels, bless our gathering.

May the Lord Jesus Christ, through the prayer of Mary, his mother, who stills all evil, bless everyone who prepared this book, paper, and parchment, and wrote it, and also those who translated it , and those who listen to the reading with a calm spirit and a contemplative mind.
