Today on Yom HaShoah, we remember the 6 million Jews whose lives were lost in the Holocaust. The State of Israel wisely chose to commemorate them on this day in 1951 because it was the date of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising – one of the largest acts of Jewish resistance against the N***s. May their lessons of loss, resistance and courage never cease to echo in our hearts and souls. Listen to Rabbi Flanzraich’s message about this solemn occasion and his hope for a better future. On the last day of Pesach, Rabbi Flanzraich led the Yizkor prayer and reminded us that our loved ones – though they may have departed physically – live on in our memories and in the arms of the Eternal One. 🕯️🙏

Beth Sholom stands with Jewish institutions across Toronto in supporting the initiative, affirming that Jewish life remains strong and proud.

Rabbi Aaron Flanzraich shared with our community:

“We collectively support the UJA’s 'Shabbat Strong' initiative, but feel this also provides us an opportunity to share a message of our own.

With gratitude to you, we all know that synagogue attendance and support cannot be for moments of fear and tragedy alone. Shul communities are built upon the rhythmic participation of its members; of individuals who come daily, weekly, Shabbat and holidays. They come individually and they come with family. We join in moments of personal joy and moments of collective celebration. This has been Beth Sholom’s mission since 1948.

It is to say that synagogues are not only places of refuge in times of trouble, and symbols of Jewish strength, but they are the very wellspring from where Jews are made Jew-ish. Baby namings and Brit Mila, Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, Aufriefs and Yahrtzeits, the High Holy Days and Shabbat mornings all create the lifeblood which has carried this remarkable people over time to this moment.

Your continued support and love for Beth Sholom and its mission are among the greatest tools against those who hate us. Because here we build what they wish to end - Jewish life.”

This Shabbat, and every Shabbat, we gather not from fear but from a strong commitment to Jewish life, community, and continuity.

Am Yisrael Chai.
