Revrick’s reflection, Mar 4th, 2026 Seeing the light!.
Doesn’t seeing the sunshine make you feel better? Certainly, after a long period of snow, long nights and gloomy days, the sun sort of changes one’s perspective on life and the vitamin D reenergises us I think. We are about to transition to daylight savings where we will be able to experience more sunshine and less dreary days. I suffer from seasonal effects disorder (mildly), but it sure makes a difference to me when we get more light and less darkness.

Light and darkness are a common theme in the New Testament in the bible and are reflective of Jesus life and ministry. The sun can be shining brightly, but we can find ourselves in a dark place in our lives for many reasons. We face challenges everyday life. Some are a nuisance, some take some time and effort to work through, some are short term, some are long term and some are debilitating and almost overwhelming and maybe even life threatening. When they get too big for us to handle, that’s when we need Jesus to shine a light of hope for us to find our way out. As Christians we were never promised we would not face the same thing others experience, but we were promised we wouldn’t walk alone.

When and if you find yourself in the darkness of hardship and very difficult challenges, you can take your cares and concerns to God who will provide some light and a path out of the darkness, even when you think all hope is lost.

Stay well, stay safe and may the peace of Christ be with you.

Feb 25th, devotional Finding a balance
As Christians we believe God blesses us with spiritual gifts of time talent and treasure. We can use these gifts to serve God by serving others for the common good. We can use them to make an honest living or we can use them for both depending on the situation. These gifts may come and go over time as needed in our service to Christ. Sometimes these gifts come in abundance and sometimes they are scarce.
As I read the devotional below, I was reminded that sometimes these gifts are given explicitly for our own use. One of those gifts is time. Obviously, as Christians we are committed to giving our time to help in the many activities around the church and community. But sometimes maybe the gift of time is intended for us to take for ourselves to enjoy life, relax, rejuvenate and build up our energy level for the next task. Maybe we should use the gift of time to be thankful for all the things God has blessed us with, listen to what he has to say and build on our personal relationship with God. Sort of like that one day of rest we don’t take each week. As I approach retirement in the fall, as much as I have enjoyed my ministry, I am looking forward to taking some time for myself with family and friends on my time. Read on
Today's Devotional Left Turn by Rod Marshall
Isaiah 30:21 – And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. (ESV)
I used to be not so good at listening — I was better at the doing. Now, as the doing gets harder, the listening becomes more vital. Earlier in life when I was working, I used to like to zoom up the motorways to visit customers. These days, driving is more of a bind. Out-of-town family visits take their toll, so I am grateful to have my modern car that is more comfortable than those of yesteryear. The new features like cruise control, sat-nav (satellite navigation), etc. mean that driving is not the same now as it was then. To ease the pain, I like to use the car's sat-nav to tell me the expected time of my arrival, etc. Sometimes in heavy traffic, I bluntly ignore the sat-nav, using my earlier knowledge of travelling on the minor roads, because they are reassuringly familiar and less stressful, but not always quicker.
Lately, I have felt that God was requesting me to take a step back for a while, to allow God to be God for a change, so I have taken a break from meetings of intercession for the moment. Surprisingly, the world has kept turning. I have used some of the time to fulfil the jobs that I needed to get done in the summer, such as mending the leaking roof in our office and replacing the rotten floor and walls.
Despite being on my self-imposed sabbatical, with my jobs done, God has shown me that He was not finished with my journeying. On the way to church in Rochdale at my mother-in-law's, I didn't use the sat-nav because it is a local journey. However, from previous visits, I could hear the car's voice in the back of my mind telling me where to go. As I made a "turn to the left" at a junction, I became aware of another voice burbling up from inside. The voice said something similar to today's verse: "Listen to My voice and I will direct your path," or to put it another way, "Follow Me. Pay attention to My voice. I will direct you." During the church service, I realized that this was not my imagination but a word prompted by God to pass on to someone in the service. In my being obedient, it was also a reminder to me of His words from an earlier time:
Isaiah 58:11 – And the Lord will guide you continually and satisfy your desire in scorched places and make your bones strong; and you shall be like a watered garden, like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail. (ESV)
John 21:15 – When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs." (ESV)
God's ways and timings may not be what we expect, but we are called to take heed and to be ready to speak or to do. Today, let us not be surprised when God calls out, "Follow Me, in whatever way that may be!"
Prayer: Lord, You are the Shepherd, and we recognize Your voice when You speak. Enable our ears to hear and our hearts not to be afraid to obey. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Revrick’s reflection, Feb 18th, 2026 Living in a small town.
Growing up in Hespeler in the fifties and sixties, there weren’t many secrets. If someone didn’t know who you were personally, they could probably connect the dots to your siblings or parents. Sometimes that worked in your favour and sometimes, not so much. It depended on the situation they recognized you. There were advantages and disadvantages of knowing most of the people in town. In a crisis, the community usually rallied around a family to help in whatever way they could.
In the past week, we witnessed a disgruntled young man take out his frustration and anger at a school in Tumbler Ridge in B.C., killing nine, injuring twenty five and affecting the whole community of about 2,700 people. Coming from a small town, I think we can better understand the impact of this event on the community. Although this type of devastation may beyond our ability to imagine the horror, we can imagine the community rallying around the victims and their families, offering whatever they have to offer to help them get them get through. Although Tumbler Ridge is on the other side of the country, that doesn’t mean we can’t do anything.
We can stand with the folks of Tumbler Ridge and take a moment to pray for God’s presence in the community to bring some comfort to the families in this time of grief and provide the support they will need to get through this difficult time.
Stay well, stay safe and may the peace of Christ be with you.

Feb 5th devotional “Look at the whole”
If we wanted to define ourselves by one moment in time, it would be hard to do. There are certainly some moments in time we are very proud of and may have been very influential in forming who we are, such as becoming a Christian, wining some prestigious award or the letters that follow our name Phd, BA or MDIV or CEO. Or maybe marriage, becoming a parent, turning from addiction, or finding that inner sense of peace and the list goes on. However, I am sure that there are other moments in people’s lives that they are not so proud of. Things like being in jail, cheating on a partner, stealing from your employer and the that list goes on as well. I think trying to define ourselves by one moment in time is unfair and doesn’t make sense. We must look at the whole to define who we are.

Trying to read scripture is like that too. There are certain verses we hold in our heart like John3:16. But John 3:17 may be just as important. Just like moments in life, some verses definitely help shape who we are in a positive way. But, just like moments in life, there are verses that can definitely make us feel guilty, ashamed and unworthy. I recently had a conversation with a person who was feeling badly regarding one verse of scripture, that made them feel unworthy. I am sure there are lots of them in the bible as in the devotional below. But the bible was never intended to be read one verse at a time. The message from scriptures comes from the whole.

Although it is true we all fall short of the glory of God and are unworthy. It is also true we are saved by the grace of God. To doubt is part of the process of growing our faith and it also means we know that we must constantly evaluate what we do in our lives relative to our relationship with God. Come judgement day, I think we all must have faith and hope in God’s graciousness, love, mercy and forgiveness. Read on

Todays devotional Changing the outcome by Mary Daniel
Isaiah 8:13 – Sanctify the Lord of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread. (KJV)
Psalm 18:13 – And the Lord also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire. (KJV)

Several years ago, I learned a technique to help others when they are troubled by recurring dreams involving memories of situations that have troubling or sad endings. It encompasses, in part, a form of visualization. Instead of immediately getting up when one awakens from a troubled dream, it helps if one remains lying down, re-creating the dream, and changing the outcome to a positive ending. It isn't always easy and it doesn't change the entire situation all at once. It is a step, however small at first, to overcoming the fear.

Sermons using scriptures such as the ones quoted today used to send a chill of fear through me, and leave me scared for some time, lest I be a victim of his wrath. If a suggested scripture for the day happened to be just such a one, I would be sure it was meant for me and I would be going straight to hell. I've long since learned however, that, just as one can change the outcome of a dream by re-doing it and continuing on, one can also change the outcome of their interpretation of the scriptures by first understanding, for example, that fear can mean respecting, honouring, beholding — and that by continuing on in the scripture, we learn that He is a God of love, understanding and compassion.

Continuing in Isaiah chapter 9, we read of Christ's birth, and how his name shall be called "Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace." And continuing in Psalm 18, it speaks of how he delivers us, protects us, delights in us. Whether we need to change the outcome of our outlook, or the outcome of something else, it is through Him that we find the knowledge, the strength, and the courage.

Prayer: Grant us Lord, the courage to meet challenging situations, the strength to face our fears and the wisdom to seek higher understanding. In Your name we pray. Amen
