BLUE NOT GREEN: 7 Things You Need to Know About Saint Patrick of Ireland.
1) Patrick's official colour is "Saint Patrick Blue", or azure. Green is associated with Irish independence movements; but in Patrick's day, Ireland already was independent.
2) Patrick's birth name was Maewyn Succat. He was born in England. He took the name Patrick when he became a priest.
3) Patrick was captured as a youth and sold into slavery in Ireland. He escaped, but later returned to Ireland as a missionary. Love triumphed over fear!
4) He personally baptized 120,000 people!
5) He founded 300 churches, which were supported not by royalty, but by communal farms and businesses.
6) When barbarian attacks brought the Dark Ages to the rest of Europe, much of the learning of the Church and the world in general was preserved in the libraries and life of Patrick's communities.
7) Patrick died on March 17 in 461 A.D. We still sing the hymns Patrick wrote, and read his writings. His life was a gift from God that keeps on giving!
