Sometimes, cleaning a headstone is about so much more than removing years of growth.
This beautiful old sandstone marker carries a piece of Finnish history, with the traditional words “TÄSSÄ LEPÄÄ” “HERE RESTS.” This was a common phrase found on Finnish memorials, expressing the peaceful idea that the person is resting here.
The stone also carries a cross, a name, family information and dates reaching back into the 1800s. The older spelling and lettering are a beautiful reminder of the time in which this person lived.
When I first saw it, decades upon decades of weather, lichen and biological growth had almost hidden the words. Rather than aggressively scrubbing this fragile sandstone, I chose a gentler approach, treatment, patience and letting the stone reveal itself in its own time.
And slowly, it did. ❤️
The lettering came back into view.
The cross became clearer.
The dates could be seen again.
And for a moment, someone who has been resting here for well over a century was given their voice back.
“Tässä lepää.”
“Here rests.”
Three little words, but what a beautiful reminder of what a cemetery really is.
These aren’t just stones.
They’re names.
They’re families.
They’re lives.
They’re stories.
And as long as we can still read their names, they haven’t been forgotten.
