Are you familiar with the term “ableism”?
Ableism is discrimination and prejudice against people with disabilities and seeing them as “lesser” or needing to be “fixed”.
What does everyday ableism look like? Here are some examples:
- Failing to create or prioritize accessible inclusive spaces.
- Feeding into stereotypes that negatively affect those who have a disability.
- Asking invasive questions about someone’s medical history.
- Framing disability as either tragic or inspirational in media.
- Talking to an adult person with a disability as though they are a child.
