To the Mayor, Members of Council, and Residents of Thunder Bay,
On behalf of the Thunder Bay Muslim Religious Association (TBMRA), we are formally withdrawing our proposal regarding the property at 60 Junot Avenue.
We believe it is important to provide some context regarding how this process began and why we have reached this decision. Several years ago, TBMRA approached the City of Thunder Bay to discuss the growing needs of our community and the need for a larger space to accommodate worship, education, and community programming. The City identified 60 Junot Avenue as a potential opportunity and encouraged us to pursue the appropriate planning and consultation process.
Following the City's guidance, we spent more than two years working through a rigorous process. Our volunteers dedicated countless hours of personal time, and our organization invested significant resources into planning, design, studies, and professional services to meet the City's requirements and vision for the site. We entered this process in good faith, with the sincere intention of creating a space that would serve both our community and the broader city.
Throughout this journey, we have listened carefully to residents, community organizations, and stakeholders who shared concerns about the future of Junot Park. We recognize the deep connection many people have to this space and respect the perspectives that have been expressed.
We would like to especially acknowledge the dedication of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and its supporters. Their commitment to preserving the park and advocating for a place that has meaning to many members of our community deserves recognition and respect.
While our proposal was intended to create opportunities for worship, education, recreation, and housing for the general public, as well as community connection, it became clear that the discussion had expanded beyond the original planning considerations. As an organization guided by the principles of respect, compassion, and community service, after careful reflection, we believe that withdrawing our application is the most constructive path forward.
This decision does not diminish our commitment to Thunder Bay. TBMRA is here to stay. We are your neighbours, your colleagues, your classmates, your friends, and fellow citizens who care deeply about the future of Thunder Bay. We remain proud members of this community and remain committed to finding a suitable home for our growing congregation. More importantly, we remain committed to building friendships, fostering understanding, and contributing positively to the social fabric of our city.
We came to this process with the goal of serving our community and building bridges. We leave it with gratitude for the conversations that took place and with respect for everyone who participated. Our hope is that this decision will help strengthen relationships and reaffirm our shared desire for a peaceful, inclusive, and united Thunder Bay.
