For the first time since 1983, the Church calendar has a new feast. The Feast of Creation in Christ opened this year's Season of Creation, marked by the World Council of Churches (WCC) with a service on the theme "Living Water," drawn from Ezekiel 47, on 1 September.

Rev. James Bhagwan, general secretary of the Pacific Conference of Churches, preached on the water crises facing Pacific communities: rivers carrying plastic to the sea, wells turning saline as oceans rise, taps running dry where access is already scarce. "We are surrounded by water, but something within humanity has become dry," he said. "Jesus does not offer bottled water. He offers relationship."

Dr Louk Andrianos, WCC consultant for Care for Creation, Sustainability, and Climate Justice, opened the service from Crete. Abigayle Bolado, WCC programme executive for Young People in the Ecumenical Movement, led intercessions alongside representatives of the Laudato Si Movement with prayers rising from Nairobi to Beirut, from Sami territories in northern Finland to southern Africa.

His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of the Ecumenical Patriarchate whose 1989 Day of Prayer gave rise to the Season of Creation, called ecological responsibility "a categorical imperative."

The Season of Creation continues through 4 October, part of the Ecumenical Decade of Climate Justice Action (2025–2034).

The Feast of the Creator opens the Season of Creation with worship that turns attention to God’s work in creation. Rooted for centuries in Orthodox tradition, the feast has become the focus of a wider ecumenical movement, embraced by many churches seeking a shared liturgical expression of God as Creator.
