ONE CHURCH THOROLD ECUMENICAL GOOD FRIDAY WALK AND SERVICE
We seem to be caught in a world of divisiveness. There are generational disagreements: young people feel like they are not understood by the older generation and the elderly do not feel respected by their younger counterparts. As much as we wish and may suggest racism does not exist – it does. There are those who feel entitled and there are those who feel threatened because of their race or skin colour. Not everyone welcomes refugees and bitterly blame them for unemployment conditions and using up of facilities and funds meant for “Canadian” citizens. A number of wars are being waged around the world and heated arguments breakout about who is in the right, who to support. And of course, there is the old standby of many an argument – politics. But in the present environment they seem more bitter, more divisive. With the anonymity of the internet, disagreements have become, much more vitriolic, and literally threatening.
So many conflicting attitudes, beliefs and concerns. This week is “Holy Week” in the Christian faith. Even if for this one week, let us put our differences aside, let it be a new beginning. Let us join together to embrace the events of this week. Let us set aside all our prejudices and disagreements. Let us experience the solemn events of Good Friday together because with out the pain and sadness of Good Friday, we would not have the joyous celebration of the resurrection on Easter.
The One Church Thorold Group would like to invite everyone to embrace Good Friday by joining us in a walk and ecumenical service (or for the service only for those who can not make the walk). The walk will begin outside St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, 24 Clairmont St. at 10 a.m. (service 11:00 a.m.)
The walk will circle through the core of downtown Thorold, stopping at stations where a section of the story of the passion will be read and a short prayer will be made for various groups and organizations affecting our community. The last station will take place, inside St. Andrew’s so that the people who could not make the walk can experience one of the stations. An ecumenical service will follow.
After the service, a social time with refreshments will take place. The proceeds of the collection will be donated to Community Care.
