Memorial of St. John Baptist Scalabrini – June 1
Today, June 1, the Church remembers the death anniversary and liturgical feast of John Baptist Scalabrini, known as the “Father of Migrants.” His life and ministry continue to inspire the Church’s mission of care and accompaniment for migrants and refugees around the world.
In April 2026, St. Paschal Baylon Parish in Thornhill joyfully welcomed over one hundred Missionaries of St. Charles Borromeo (Scalabrinians) for a solemn Eucharistic celebration during their Interprovincial Assembly held in Toronto. Presided over by the Superior General, Very Reverend Leonir Mario Chiarello, C.S., the gathering reflected the vitality of the Scalabrinian mission today under the theme “Intercultural Fraternity as a Scalabrinian Vocation.”
That celebration was a powerful expression of gratitude for the Congregation’s long presence at St. Paschal Baylon Parish, which has been entrusted to the Scalabrinian Missionaries since its foundation in 1957. It also highlighted the global reach of their ministry, which continues to serve migrant and refugee communities with compassion, faith, and dedication.
On this feast day, we give thanks for the enduring legacy of St. Scalabrini and for the continued witness of the Scalabrinian Missionaries who, in his spirit, walk with migrants and uphold their dignity in today’s world.
