Baha'i Community of Canada / Communauté baha'ie du Canada

Baha'i Community of Canada / Communauté baha'ie du Canada The Bahá’í Faith has been present in Canada since 1898.

The Bahá'í Faith is based on the teachings of Bahá’u’lláh, which emphasize the oneness of humanity, the oneness of God and the fundamental oneness of religion. Canadian Bahá’ís come from diverse backgrounds and are dedicated to the promotion of a global society that reconciles the spiritual and materials aspects of life. They work with their friends and neighbours to strengthen communities through the spiritual education of children, the empowerment of young people, the enrichment of the devotional character of community life, and the expansion of capacities for service.

On August 10, the Toronto Bahá’í Centre hosted the The Canadian Council of Churches/Le Conseil canadien des Églises (CCC) and National Council of Churches of Christ of the USA (NCC) for a study visit as part of the North America-Turtle Island and Regional Ecumenical Theological Institute (NATI-RETI). The day included an interfaith panel on ‘End of Life’ and roundtable discussions on the topic of ‘Belonging’.

The panelists discussed topics related to end of life from a range of faith perspectives and explored how different beliefs can shape different approaches to end-of-life care. Moderated by Pastor Peter Noteboom, General Secretary of CCC, the speakers on the panel included:

• Rev. Dr. Peter Kuhnert, Representative of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, Co-Chair of CCC’s Faith and Life Sciences Reference Group
• Imam Dr. Abdulhai Patel, President of the Canadian Multifaith Federation, Founder of the Canadian Council of Imams
• Dr. Layli Sanaee, Emergency Physician, Medical Director of Emergency Preparedness at University Health Network, Assistant Professor at University of Toronto

The spirit and themes discussed in the second part of the day echoed the many conversations arising from the nationwide series of roundtables on the theme of belonging launched by the Bahá’í Community of Canada’s Office of Public Affairs in April 2025. The participants explored how true belonging can be fostered in the context of their churches and local communities. Insights included:

• Fostering a sense of belonging requires examining both personal assumptions and structural barriers, including the ways that language, cliques, institutional arrangements, and assumptions about others can limit participation and prevent people from feeling fully included.
• Genuine inclusion requires moving beyond tolerance and actively challenging “us and them” dynamics, underscoring the importance of engaging others who hold different perspectives, striving to seek new relationships, and moving toward a culture of embracing difference as a source of learning, connection, and mutual understanding.

As preparations continue for the construction of Canada's first Bahá'í House of Worship, we reflect on the generations of effort, sacrifice, and hope that have brought us to this moment. We also look ahead to the countless people and future generations who will find this sacred space as a source for spiritual renewal.

A House of Worship is a gift for the future. Open to all, it will offer a space where people can turn to prayer, deepen bonds of friendship, and find renewed strength to contribute to the well-being of their communities for generations to come.

//

In this third segment on CBC/Radio-Canada, John Longhurst speaks to Elham Seddigh Ayafor, Director of Government Relations for the Office of Public Affairs of the Bahá’í Community of Canada, about the current situation of the Bahá’ís in Iran.

“The government [of Iran] has, as in all other times of national crisis, tried to scapegoat the Bahá’ís for that crisis, using hate speech in the media, by increasing persecution, more arrests, home raids, et cetera.”

On International Youth Day, we celebrate the efforts of young people who are working to build a better world. Regarded as protagonists for social change, youth are exerting positive influence in a myriad of ways, including through expressing a profound concern for justice, advancing their careers in light of the needs of society, and mentoring those younger than them. Youth play an integral part in the development of their communities when their capacities are realized.

08/08/2026

We welcome Canada's strong statement on the case of Afshin Heyratian. His imprisonment reflects a broader pattern of persecution targeting Iran's Bahá'í community solely because of their beliefs. Freedom of religion or belief and due process must be upheld for all.
