Something that is often overlooked in Jyotish is the extreme dependency of the Moon on other planets for its Health in the nativity. Because the Moon does not produce its own light and takes on the influence of whatever shines upon it, when it is absent strong influences (by a neighbouring or conjunct planet), it will be afflicted.

The nature of this affliction depends on the House, Sign and aspects involved. We can identify this by seeing whether or not the Moon is "Isolated". This means that there aren't any planets in an adjacent House on either side of the House in which the Moon is placed and that the Moon is not conjunct another planet. For the purposes of determining Isolation, Rahu and Ketu do not count as alleviating factors. Rahu and Ketu do not reflect light (like the other planets do), nor do they produce any light (like the Sun), rather they devour the light and therefore they actually exacerbate the plight of the Moon, in that Rahu and Ketu only serve to further shroud the Moon in darkness.

When the Moon is Isolated, we can expect the native to be "isolated". That is, they may struggle with socializing, establishing intimate relationships with others, being understood, feeling part of their community, feeling connected to family and friends. Because the Moon also represents the Mother in the chart, it also often indicates an unhealthy or distant relationships with the Mother. If the affliction is SEVERE, it can indicate adoption, loss of the Mother very early in life or outright life-long contention or conflict between the native and his/her mother. Like many afflictions in the nativity, this can be alleviated and worked on via the proper devotional practices and life-style changes.

Below are two examples of charts wherein the Moon is isolated, in one, you will notice that Rahu is conjunct the Moon and thus the Moon is in a greater state of affliction. @ Sydney, Nova Scotia

The Nakshatras: Bharani

Bharani is the second portion of Aries, which extends from 13 20' degrees to 26 40' degrees of Aries. Bharani is the Birth of Venus, the very advent of s*xuality and procreation in the zodiac. Bharani means "Bearing" or rather, more specifically "She Who Bears". The implication is that of pregnancy but this also refers to Bharani's general nature as the bearer of energy, the very essence of feminine receptivity and fertility.

This asterism entails the very process of conception, gestation and birth; the division of the One into The Two which become S*xual Poles, Great Mother and Great Father, the Matrimonial Binary which begets all of manifestation's various forms. It is of great salience that Mars rules Aries and that Bharani rules Venus within it, for it is here that these Ur-S*xual planetary energies first engage in S*xual Union and Creative Expression. This nakshatra also rules over the subtle forces which are expressed as the s*xual fluids and gametes of both s*xes, as well as the resultant zygote that follows their union.

The first phase of The Creation, Ashwini, is the raw unleashing of primal energies and potential, the Explosion of the First Dawn, but it is uniform, plasmic and indistinct - undifferentiated. Here, in Bharani, this potential is harnessed and projected Earthward from the Heavens. Aries becomes a shaper of forms, an exertion upon the World of Flesh.

This exertion must be understood in respect to the Vedic theonym for Venus, Shukracharya or simply Shukra. Shukra means "Bright" or "Clear" (a meaning shared with the Western theonym Venus) but it can also be translated as "The Seed of God" or simply "Semen". Shukra has several mythological origin stories, some of them involve His (yes, his) birth via the ej*******on of a Greater deific, often Shiva, Shukra being the very fluid which is produced.

In Ayurveda (Vedic Medicine), the word Shukra is used to refer to both semen and eggs and is said to be a sublte property which is expressed physically as the gamete in both s*xes. In the Mahabharata Shukra divides himself in two (the number 2 is of great symbolic importance to all three Venus nakshatras), one half becomes a source of knowledge for the Devas (the Gods) and the other becomes the guru of the Asuras (the Demons), hence the alternate name for Shukra, Asuracharya (Priest of the Demons).

Shukra encapsulates the Chinese metaphysical notion of "Heaven to Earth" energy, the Projection of Design into Matter. We see this sort of symbolism recapitulated via various myths about Venus around the world, however, the most famous is that which has been preserved in the Christian canon as the story of Lucifer.

Like Venus, Lucifer also means "Bright" and both are associated with the Morning Star (which is not actually a star, but the planet Venus itself). Also, like Shukra, Lucifer is a Priest of the Demons. Lucifer also descends to the earth, and is likewise cast from Heaven. However, in the Book of Enoch, Lucifer seeks out this descent and in fact lusts for the material world and its flesh. In this text he is called Samjaza, which means "The One Who Has Seen" or "I Have Seen", referring to his having witnessed the Daughters of Man and lusted for them.

Since Samjaza is an angel, he is forbidden to copulate or engage in the pleasures of the flesh and having convinced many others of the Heavenly Host that this taboo should be indulged, he gathers in secret with the other Watchers and they clandestinely follow him in his descent upon the women of the Earth, aspiring to recapitulate the Fall of Az**el (Satan), whom they worship secretly (Az**el is, after a fashion, another facet of this same Venusian energy). While Samjaza and the Watchers then beget horrible children, giants called the Nephilim, by way of their unnatural procreation with womankind, they also instruct mankind in various Arts and blasphemies: metalurgy, magick, cosmetics, prostitution, weapon forging, the fabrication of jewelry, painting and all manner of carnal knowledge and the secrets of necromancy - all Venusian arts. The Watchers are subsequently discovered and punished for their aberrant behaviour by Punishing Angels.

In one text, Semjaza is punished with "Eternal Falling", wherein he is suspended betwixt Heaven and Earth, forever tumbling downward, with one eye closed and the other forever open. {This One-Eyed quality is also present in Vedic literature - there is a myth in which Shukracharya is blinded in one eye by Vishnu with a blade of grass when he attempts to prevent Vishnu from reclaiming the Universe from the Demon King Bali.} This Eternal Descent very much describes the ceaseless 'burrowing' and exploration of Matter and Flesh which Bharani engages in. Although the connotations of these tales are largely sinister and perverse, all aspects of Venus which are indeed endemic to its nature, they only represent the negative outcomes of this energy (those pertaining to the Half of Shukra which instructs the Asuras) which also has healthier and more benefic manifestations (Shukra's half which instructs the Devas) which are less prevalent in Abrahamic myth. For although we see all of the Venusian pitfalls: Lust, Materialism, Peversion, Forbidden Knowledge and Transgression, there is also Creativity, Fertility, Science, Technology, and Artistry. Venus is also often associated with meteors, which calls to mind more recent, secular myths, wherein the origin of all organic life was carried here by a meteor.

With the above in mind, let us return to Bharani. Because Bharani deals explicitly with The Fall, and the Origin of S*xuality, it is at once the most primal and untamed of the Venus nakshatras and the most ambitiously creative and fertile. The explosive and driven nature of Mars via Aries is carried into the Venusian world of creativity and art, procreation and feminimity. The very symbol of Bharani is the Yoni or V***a, the Flesh-Gate through which all of mankind has entered the world. Since Bharani pertains to the preceding proceses which culminate in Birth, it is also associated with the process whereby the Soul is affixed to the Flesh of its next incarnation. This is where the role of Bharani's resident deity becomes apparent - the role of Yama.

Yama is the God of Death, and he is the upholder of Dharma in the Afterlife. When a Soul comes to Yama, it is he that guides it to its next Body, that the process whereby Karma is metabolized is continued. Yama also has the Power to return the Soul to a Body it has left and this is where Bharani's associations with necromancy arise. Shukra is also in possession of this Great Secret, called Sanjeevni Vidhya, a knowledge which he employs in various myths to extend lives well beyond their natural limits, resurrect the dead, and heal mortal wounds. This Knowledge was imparted to Shukra after he devoted himself via Bhakti towards Shiva, as a reward from his Lord for his faith. Shukra employs his gifts to exhaust material fixation and hedonism by giving people their fill of it, revealing its meaninglessness by flooding their Souls with attachment until the Soul can bear it no more and the desire to address their karmas arises. In this way, Shukra and Yama work together to Overcome Flesh with Flesh, to weave Life and Death together that the Soul can advance beyond its most infantile phases. Again, Bharani persists as the Bearer of the World, nurturing young souls with experiences to overcome and karmas that Powers represented in later phases of the Zodiac can aid in cleansing.

It should also be noted that there is a great deal of symbolism in art and literature, especially in poetry, which connects Death and S*x, the or**sm often being referred to as the Little Death. This relationship between Death and S*x is quite nakedly on display in Bharani, where Yama and Shukra work in tandem: One fertilizing the Flesh with Souls and the other shaping the Flesh in novel ways that the Soul's experiences will themselves be novel, propelling it on its Journey through Samsara.

In the nativities of human beings, Bharani expresses the most primal of Venusian qualities: creativity, fertility, productivity, innovativeness, perversion, s*xual fetishism and an obsession with indulgence and luxury. Bharani natives are, by nature, elitist and extremely judgemental in the aesthetic realm, holding appearances and fashion in high regard. Venusians are, as a result, the most likely to take to ethnocentric views, cliquey behaviour, join exclusive groups, or look down on those unlike themselves.

Venus tends to favour its own progeny and is highly nepotistic, thus, those who are expressions of Venusian energy tend to surround themselves with their own creations and like-minded people who will appreciate them. The women are high cheeked, with elven, delicate features, plump lips and alluring eyes. The men, on the other hand, are often conventionally unattractive, even ugly - bulging eyes which are often a tad too far apart; jutting, spade-like chins; strange jowl lines; uncommon facial contours; and small eyes. Venusian men are also often noticeably successful at obtaining highly sought-after members of the fairer s*x, despite their homeliness, an ability which often perplexes onlookers.

The Nakshatras: Ashwini

Ashwini is the First of the 27 Nakshatras and the first of the Ketu ruled signs. Ashwini means "Born of a Female Horse" or "the Horse-Woman". Another more archaic name for this asterism is Aswayuja, which can be translated as "She Who Yokes Horses". This equestrian theme extends into this asterism's primary symbol: the Horse's Head. The Horse here is the representative of a Journey in potentiae, a great Power which, if tamed, will transport its Master. Thus this sign's primary domain is that of Beginnings, but in the most primal and originating sense. Ashwini constitutes the initial 13'20 degrees of Aries, and as such it can be described as the Beginning of the Beginning. Here, genesis itself finds birth in the explosive and nuclear world of Mars, where the Headless Ketu first harnesses the Power of Creation.

Unlike the conquering Magha or the annihilating Mula, Ashwini is not defined by apocalyptic nostalgia or tribal memory, rather, it is the establishment of what shall be thereafter Remembered. Ashwini is the grand emergence from Nothingness, the first Immanence of the Self into Manifestation. Here is the Prime Materia of the Alchemists which carries within it the Ur-Memory which Ketu yearns for and from which it derives its intense desire for Moksha. Here, all original states and possible forms are secreted away and made accessible to future generations and epochs.

The Ashwini Kumars or the Ashwins, the Twin Horsemen, are the presiding deities of this asterism. These Divine Twins are strongly associated with the Vedic Goddess Ushas who is the Mother of the Dawn that awakes the Twins to drive away the Night and the Oppression of Darkness. As the First Nakshatra, Ashwini banishes the prior "darkness" of Non-manifestation and heralds the dawn of a new Age of Incarnation. We can also interpret this as a banishing of the Darkness of the Watery depths represented in the Last of the Rashis, Pisces. The Twins features in many myths where they retrieve the souls of various slain and wronged figures to their bodies, restoring them to life. This amazing power to heal and reconstitute not only the sick and the lame, but to even return life to the dead, is a theme which is carried in some fashion throughout all three Ketu nakshatras, albeit in forms sometimes less savoury than what is seen here. The symbolism of the Horse is again salient here, in that it is this sacred beast which carries the Twins, via chariot, into the realms of the dead and back again, that they might perform their miracles. Thus the Horse is a symbol of the Power to transit the realms and communicate with the Dead and most importantly the Ancestors.

With these attributes in mind we can see how Ashwini holds dominion over the Healing Arts, Resurrection, Initiations and Beginnings, Birth, Immortality, Youth and Travel. There is an abundance of peo
ple born under this nakshatra in the Health industry, amoungst the ranks of doctors and nurses, but even more commonly they appear in more traditionalist healing disciplines involving the use of herbalism and more holistic methodologies.

Ashwini, like the other Ketu nakshatras also creates a sensitivity to the paranormal or supernatural. A disproportionate number of Ashwini natives take interest in ghosts, report having encounters with spirits and the subtle-bodied dead and having precognitive dreams. Even less gifted Ashwini natives still possess a sort of "spaced out" or vacuous quality, belying an ego with a tenuous grasp on its "host".

Having Moon in Ashwini tends to make the eyes sleepy and large, the skin pale, the hair dark and produces a prominent chin and forehead. Another feature we sometimes see with Ashwini is a gap between the two frontmost teeth of the upper jaw.

The Nodes - Ketu

Ketu is the Descending Node, Southern Node or Tail of the Dragon. It is the Body to Rahu's Head and from this much of Ketu's nature can be ascertained. Ketu, as a Headless Demon, is primarily representative of Ego-death, detachment and the "Ambient I" (as described by Austin Osman Spare). This symbolism also represents the detachment from reason and logic and a reliance instead on intuition, instinct and the inheritances of the Body. For the Body is the concrescent expression of countless generations of progenitors and therefore symbolizes the Ancestors and the wisdom, memory and intent which they have contributed to all Present Forms. Ketu is also Karmic inheritance and is the transmitter of past Karmas into present incarnations, its movements (along with Rahu) are the rhythm of Karma, cause-and-effect and retributive equilibrium.

Ketu is often depicted as golden-brown or dark brown in colour, having the body of a snake and a Star for its Head. He sits atop a throne, adorned and surrounded with luxurious items, chiefly fine silks, sandal paste, flowers and garlands. He has four arms, one of which holds an umbrella, another holds either a quiver of arrows or a single arrow. He possesses no bow, and therefore, his realm of activity is the Arrow-Wound, rather than aiming and firing of the Arrow. This of course relates back to his presiding over matters of inheritance and Karma, but it also deals with the extreme emptiness and utter receptivity of Ketu. There is no planet more passive, more empty than Ketu. It's submission is like a Great Valley or Pit, which drags everything down into it, which can withstand any amount of force or aggression and still remain, unphased and unperturbed. To slip on the slopes of Ketu, is to succumb to its detachments and its emptiness.

Ketu's umbrella is one of his more benefic instruments, with which he bestows protection and concealment for his followers and those who learn from his potentially illusion shattering deprivations. Ketu always highlights what is false and insubstantial, for Ketu is privy to the secrets of Maya and his gift is the nagging sensation of unreality which instigates the spiritual quest for meaning and purpose. Ketu occludes the light of manifestation so that detachment, past Karmas and the Will of the Ancestors might shine instead. However, if we are not prepared, we will mistake this disassociation for madness or worse yet, not realize that it is occurring at all and simply find ourselves suddenly disinterested or unmoved by one area of life or another.

Under the sway of Ketu we may also find ourselves oddly compelled to do things we do not understand, dream of lives we do not recall living or feel moved by events, people, places, art or objects with which we have no present personal connection. Here, Ketu is attempting to awaken us to the hidden motivations of the subconscious and the Soul which pertain to the DNA, the Spirits of our Ancestors and our previous incarnations, by drawing us into recapitulation and the unbidden participation in processes once initiated in the past but not yet resolved. In this way, Ketu also relates mythologically to the typical ghost-story, the tales of restless spirits haunting the vestiges of their prior existence in the material world, doomed to repeat the same mistakes and retain the same attachments indefinitely, until a living person helps them resolve their karma. Likewise, Ketu's effects are like ghosts of unresolved Karma. It should also be noted here that people who are ruled by and therefore themselves expressions of the Southern Node in the world, are themselves often privy to supernatural experiences, attracted to haunted places and generally fascinated with the paranormal, the dead and the old and forgotten.

The ancient Vedic seers also claim that the following terms are also, after a fashion, alternative names for Ketu: Tamas, Dwaja and Shikhin.

Tamas essentially means darkness, but here, it refers to the Avarana Shakti which is the Veil which occludes the process whereby metaphysical forms undergo manifestation. This may also be understood as the Veil of Sleep, that fuzzy and implaceable moment wherein we "fall asleep". Ketu has the Power to see through this Veil, but unlike Rahu's perception, Ketu concerns itself with the process whereby what is manifest returns to subtler states of Becoming and ultimately transcendence into the World of Being.

Dwaja means "Flag" or "Emblem". This refers to Ketu's peculiar relationship to identity. Unlike Rahu, Ketu has no individuated concept of I and perceives I-ness instead as a collective and concrescent phenomenon. Ketu sees individuals only as representatives of their Ancestors, their Karmas, their History and the momentum of the Past. Ketu functions as the collective impressions of a people, or even the spirit of a place or country.

Shikhin has many meanings but the one which is most instructive in a treatise as brief as this is "the Wound of an Arrow" or "an Arrow's Pe*******on". This deals with Ketu as the marker of Karmic afflictions and past traumas. The arrow is also often a symbol of unknown attackers or unseen forces, for often the prey does not see the archer before or when it is shot- the tribulations of Ketu are often felt as mysterious wounds, we tend not to notice Ketu's effects immediately and awakening to their prescence is often surreal and disorienting. Ketu does not speak directly or warn those he aims to teach, he simply tears the rug of material involvement out from under our feet, no matter how firmly they may have been planted or how attached we may be. Commonly, Ketu is experienced as depression, a general aimlessness or feeling of purposelessness, this is Ketu's way of asking us to look for something more and to investigate our boredom, our detachment or our inertia and root out its source, the pith of the very lack which begets our predicament.

Ketu is an incredibly spiritual planet in any nativity and if we can consciously explore its role in our lives, we can reorient ourselves towards higher things, find purpose and meaning in our lives and even overcome our Karmas.

The Nodes - Rahu and Ketu

Rahu and Ketu are known as the Northern and Southern Nodes of the Moon in the West. They are points in the Moon's eliptic which indicate where the Moon can interact with the position of the Earth and the Sun to cause either a Solar or Lunar eclipse. These Nodes are thus not represented in the Heavens by physical bodies and are thus counted as Shadow Planets- Occult actors whose purview is illusion, delusion, darkness, Karma, Maya, and the Secrets of Manifestation and Liberation, amoung other domains of activity.

Rahu is often depicted as the severed head of a demon, or the dismbodied head of a dragon or serpent. Ketu, conversely, is often depicted as a headless demon, or the tail of a dragon or serpent. They were, at one time, a single entity, the Serpent Demon Vasuki, whose head was severed by Lord Vishnu for attempting (with the aid of a disguise) to drink the Nectar of the Gods, the Amrita, but not before it swallowed a single drop of the nectar, which was sufficient to grant the severed head and its body immortality and divine powers. Legend also has it that Lord Vishnu could see through Vasuki's disguise from the moment he had arrived amoungst the Gods to partake of the nectar and that the creation of Rahu and Ketu were in accordance with Vishnu's design.

The Nodes do not submit themselves to easy understanding, many of their attributes appear self-contradictory at first glance and only through regular study will their nature begin to reveal itself.

Today we will focus on Rahu.

Rahu, in addition to the depiction provided above, is also represented in many sources as an immense Mountain of Darkness. Sometimes he is shown as a black or blue-skinned figure, with four arms, who rides a lioness. He wields a scimitar, a spear and a shield and one hand is empty.

With the scimitar he dissects and destroys intimately, this represents Rahu at his most intellectual and obvious, wherein his activity is felt as analysis, conjecture, philosophies of critique and complexification.

The Spear is the tool with wich Rahu strikes from hidden places, this represents the sudden upending of order, of reason, of stability. When things suddenly confuse, cease to make sense, or inexplicably go awry, his Spear has struck at a distance from an unseen or occluded position. This often takes the form of some physical or political event, which despite its material severity (whether great or small) is felt more intensely on the psychological plane.

The Shield is what Rahu uses to protect and obscure his devotees and those who act on his behalf, having learned from his trials and understood his Mysteries. This is the cover of Darkness, the Night and the Hidden Benefactor. This is also what deflects any attempt to alleviate his activity or oppose him. Rahu and Ketu (and to a certain degree, Saturn) are the only planets which are not beholden to the Luminaries (The Sun and Moon) in some way and they are ultimately beholden to a higher Cosmic Order than the one with which the other planetary bodies are charged.

With Rahu's open hand, he bestows his blessings. These may take many forms, some of which may appear more akin to curses at first glance. These blessings may also be in the form of fame, influence or wealth, which the recipient may put to use however he or she sees fit, though Rahu will watch from afar and dispense with his judgements and interventions in accordance with how these gifts are utilized or abused.

Rahu is the Lord of Maya, illusions, obsession, arrogance and insatiability. He also presides over technology, progress and the manifestation of forms. Being bodiless, his hunger cannot be satisfied and he has no sense of what nourishes or poisons, and devours all things alike and thus the world of Modernity is largely his purview, for he exacerbates the conditions of ambiguity, confusion and falsehood which typify the times in which we live.

Of all the technological developments which persist under his influence, none are more connected to his obfuscating and distorting nature than radio, television and the internet. Each of these developments has heralded a new level of confusion, misunderstanding and conversely a new platform for competing versions of the "truth" and a new channel through which the human intellect might be engaged. This is, of course, a double-edged sword.

Rahu is not fundamentally wicked, though his methodology is harsh and torturous. His travails are the oppressions of the Mind and Soul by Maya, the Alchemy of Becoming. As the potential for falsehood multiplies, enduring mockeries of the truth are also dissolved. Established falsehoods are just as readily torn down by Rahu's diversifying, novelty-obsessed and perturbating influence. The once hegemonious engine of pseudo-reality that was employed by governments and institutions, the Media, has run amok and has escaped the control of oligarchic actors. Memes, "fake news", parody news sites, alternative news outlets, competing reality models as propagated in forums, digital newsletters, blogs etc have created powerful channels for outsider science, conspiracy theories, revolutionary politics and obscure occult and spiritual currents to propagate in the minds of a public which did not before have access to such a bounty of information.

Rahu cannot truly serve those who attempt to abuse his dissolutive and caustic power. Everything that is created through Rahu takes on a life of its own and those who give into his temptations shall be counted amoung his most severely punished pupils, as their efforts turn upon them in their greatest hour of self-adulation.

Rahu is also a portal or gateway, through which the Hidden Dimensions, and the more alien and foreign reaches of reality (and beyond) may find entry into our world. This is due to Rahu's role as the Eater of the Sun and Moon. When the luminaries are occluded by Rahu, the Light of Order and Stability is also occluded, and strange influences and forces may enter our world in the abscence of those Ordering and Stabilizing powers. Such intrusions may take the form of political assassinations, novel pandemics, the invention or use of new and destructive technologies or even things as surreal as UFO or crpytid sightings (even if later found to be hoaxes, since the primary activity of Rahu is illusory and psychological, thus the effect on the human imagination is the actual locus of the event).

Rahu is the Innovator, the Revolutionary Intellect and the Secret of Evolution. Many political upheavals involve a deeply Rahuvian influence and his prominence in the charts of political upstarts is great.

He is often seen as a servant or emanation of Shiva and thus serves Lord Shiva as a Great Destroyer, who propells the Ages towards their conclusions, clearing away the forces of stagnation. Thus his tribulations always serve a higher purpose and even those who attempt to abuse his gifts will only contribute to his design.

Rahu is forward-looking, self-gratifying and obsessive, but its powers are also the keys to Spiritual Success, provided they are employed in conjuction with the benefic influences latent in Ketu. Its focus is a vital component to all manner of devotional practices, and asceticism which exist in the Ta***ic and Left-Hand-Path traditions. As the creator of Illusions, Rahu is also well equipped to identify and see through what is illusory or false. Rahu, when it is acting most benefically, affords powerful faculties of perception and intuition and can help one navigate the World of Distortion in which we now live.

When we look at Rahu in our own chart, we are looking at the Locus of many of our darkest and most dangerous Karmic challenges in this life. Rahu is our Great Obsession, the Pith of our Ego's wildest dreams and attachments. Rahu is also one half of the Key to our Liberation, the attainment of which lies in the application of Rahu's focus on the spiritual source of the lowly shell with which it is initially concerned, in accordance with those past life lessons represented by our Ketu placement. Rahu holds within it an immense potential for spiritual progression, but the challenges are great and require much that many natives may be unwilling to devote or muster in this life.
