Christmas changes after 50.
Not in a way that takes something away—
but in a way that reveals what was always there.

When I was younger,
I thought Christmas lived in the noise.
The torn paper,
the last-minute assembling,
the full house,
the early mornings that came too fast.

I thought the magic was loud.

But now I know
it’s quiet.

It’s in the glow of the tree
before the day begins.
It’s in the memories that arrive unannounced—
some sweet,
some tender,
some carrying names I still miss.

After 50, Christmas becomes reflective.
Every ornament holds a season of life.
Every recipe remembers a pair of hands.
Every carol opens a door
to who we were then—
before we knew
how quickly time would move.

I didn’t understand back then
how fast children grow,
how parents age,
how suddenly a year becomes a memory.

But here I am now—
older,
a little slower,
and far more grateful.

Because Christmas after 50
isn’t about the rush anymore.
It’s about the stillness that settles in
when you finally realize
that time itself is the gift.

It’s holding the people you love
a little longer.
It’s releasing what never mattered.
It’s thanking God for another December—
another breath,
another chance to love well.

It’s sitting quietly
and realizing the greatest miracles
were never under the tree.
They were around it—
every child,
every answered prayer,
every ordinary moment
that turned out to be sacred.

Maybe that’s the beauty of growing older—
you stop chasing wonder
and start recognizing it.

So here’s to Christmas after 50—
where joy is gentler,
gratitude is deeper,
love is wider,
and the meaning is clearer than ever.

And if you’re reading this,
may you rest in this truth:
even as the years change us,
God’s love does not.

It was faithful then.
It is faithful now.
And it will be faithful
in every Christmas still to come.

Children’s Christmas Nativity Practice Announcement
Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines – Christmas Eve Mass
Attention parents and guardians,
We are excited to invite all children to participate in the Christmas Nativity play at our 5:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass, held at Holy Family Parish in Sydney Mines. This cherished tradition helps our parish celebrate the true meaning of Christmas through the joyful voices and performances of our young parishioners.
Practice Details:
To prepare for this special event, we will be holding a rehearsal for all children who wish to take part in the Nativity. The practice will ensure that everyone is comfortable with their roles and ready to share the Christmas story with our community.
· Who: All children interested in participating
· Practice Monday, December 22nd, at 1:00 Pm in the Church
· When: Please arrive at the church by 4:15 pm on Christmas Eve
· Where: Holy Family Parish, Sydney Mines
· Christmas Eve Mass 5:00 pm
Costumes and simple props will be provided, but children are welcome to bring their own if they wish. Parents are asked to stay during the practice to assist and help create a supportive environment.

Christmas Masses at Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines. Join us in celebrating Christmas at Holy Family Parish, 905 Main Street, SydneyMines. Children are especially invited to take part in the 5:00 pm Christmas Eve Mass, which will feature a special Children’s Play. All are welcome to share in the joy and spirit of Christmas with our parish community. We look forward to seeing you. Practice for the Children’s play is Monday, December 22nd, at 1:00 pm in the church.

All are welcome to join us for Bethlehem Walk & St. Nicholas Christmas Party. After the walk in the church, step into the warmth of our parish hall for the St. Nicholas Christmas Party! Celebrating the season with Christmas caroling, a visit with Santa, Treats, hot chocolate and cookies. Everything is free, bring your family, invite your neighbours, and let us celebrate the season together!

This is our Jubilee year “Pilgrims of Hope”
We invite you to join us for an International Mass and cultural meal on November 16th, at 4:00 pm at Holy Family parish church, 905 Main Street, Sydney Mines. Dress in your cultural attire and bring a symbolic item from your culture. The items will be brought up during the offatory and will be auctioned off in the hall. All proceeds from the auctioned will go to Christmas daddies! All are welcome.
