Confidence In GOD’s Providence
—————————————————

We will be better prepared for what God teaches us through trials if we have a basic understanding of His providence.

Romance 8:28. “We know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose”

I believe it is vital that all Christians have an essential awareness of God’s providence if they want to be fully prepared to cope with life’s adversity.
- Providence is how HE orchestrates, through natural means and processes, all things necessary to accomplish His purposes in the world.
- It is the most frequent way He works and controls the daily course of human events. The only other means the Lord uses to intervene in the flow of history is miracles. But He does not perform miracles in the same way now as He did during the days of Christ, the apostles, and the prophets. However, God has continuously used providence from eternity past to coordinate the infinite variety of factors necessary to accomplish His perfect purpose.

Think about it. The vast scope and endless outworking of divine providence, in which God draws together millions of details and circumstances to achieve His will each day, is a far greater miracle than the relatively uncomplicated, one-time supernatural occurrences that we usually term miracles. Belief in God’s providence is, therefore, one of the greatest exercises of faith we can have and a major contributor to our general preparedness and peace of mind as we encounter trials and hardships.

Paul trusted wholeheartedly in the providence of God, no matter how easy or challenging life was (Phil. 4:11). Joseph the patriarch stated his confidence in providence this way: “You [his brothers] meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive” (Gen. 50:20). Until we come to a similar acceptance of God’s providential control of everything, we will not fully realize the rich lessons He wants to teach us through trials, and we will not be able to apply the truth of Romans 8:28.

Tiwala sa Paglalaan ng DIYOS
——————————————————

Exemplary Living
—————————

A good example is the best form of teaching.

Mathew 10:1. "Having summoned His twelve disciples".

Matthew 10:1 is Christ's official commissioning of the twelve men He hand-picked to serve beside Him during His earthly ministry.
- Mark 3:13 says He "summoned those whom He Himself wanted, and they came to Him."
-
- In John 15:16 He tells them, "You did not choose Me, but I chose you, and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit."

This is not their call to salvation, but to service.
- With the exception of Judas, they were already saved.
- Before the foundation of the world God chose them to be redeemed in Christ, and they had responded accordingly.
Now Jesus was calling them to a specific ministry.

God always chooses those who will be saved and serve within His church. But between salvation and service there must be a time of training.
- For the disciples it was a period of three years in which Jesus Himself trained them as they experienced life together from day to day. That's the best form of discipleship.
-
- Classrooms and lectures are helpful, but there's no substitute for having a living pattern to follow—someone who models Christian virtue and shows you how to apply biblical principles to your life.

Paul understood the importance of such an example.
- In Philippians 4:9 he says, "The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things."
-
- He said to Timothy, "Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe" (1 Tim. 4:12).
-
- Peter followed suit, admonishing the church elders not to lord their authority over those in their charge, but to be godly examples (1 Pet. 5:3).

Brothers and Sisters….Whether you've been a Christian for many years or just a short time, you are an example to someone.
- People hear what you say and observe how you live.
- They look for a glimpse of Christ in your life.
-
- 🤔What do they see?
- 🤔How would they do spiritually if they followed your example perfectly?

Suggestions for Prayer 🙏
———————————-
Thank the Lord for those who are examples of godliness to you.

* What do these verses indicate about your salvation:
John 15:16, Romans 8:28, Ephesians 1:4, and 2 Thessalonians 2:13?

* According to Ephesians 2:10, why were you saved?

John 15:16
[16] You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

Study Notes 📑
——————

John 15:16 I chose you.
- ————Cf. v. 19.
- John 15:19
- [19] If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.
-
-
In case any pretense might exist among the disciples in terms of spiritual pride because of the privileges they enjoyed, Jesus made it clear that such privilege rested not in their own merit, but on his sovereign choice of them.
- —-God chose Israel (Isa. 45:4; Amos 3:2), but not for any merit (Deut. 7:7; 9:4–6).
-
- —God elected angels to be forever holy (1 Tim. 5:21).
-
He ( God) elected believers to salvation apart from any merit (Matt. 24:24; 31;
- see notes on Rom. 8:29–33; Eph. 1:3–6; Col. 3:12; Titus 1:1; 1 Pet. 1:2).
-
-
- bear fruit.
- ————-One purpose of God’s sovereign election is that the disciples who have been blessed with such revelation and understanding should produce spiritual fruit.
-
The NT describes fruit as
- ——-godly attitudes (Gal. 5:22–23),
- righteous behavior (Phil. 1:11),
- praise (Heb. 13:15),
- and especially leading others to faith in Jesus as Messiah and Son of God (Rom. 1:13–16).

Deuteronomy 8:15-16
- [15] who led you through the great and terrifying wilderness, with its fiery serpents and scorpions and thirsty ground where there was no water, who brought you water out of the flinty rock,
- [16] who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.

Ephesians 1:4
[4] even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love

Eph. 1:4 he chose us.
- ————-The doctrine of election is emphasized throughout Scripture (cf. Deut. 7:6; Isa. 45:4; John 6:44; Acts 13:48; Rom. 8:29; 9:11; 1 Thess. 1:3–4; 2 Thess. 2:13; 2 Tim. 2:10;
- see note on 1 Pet. 1:2).
-
The form of the Greek verb behind “chose” indicates that God not only chose by himself but for himself to the praise of his own glory (Eph. 1:6; 12; 14).
- —God’s election or predestination does not operate apart from or nullify man’s responsibility to believe in Jesus as Lord and Savior (cf. Matt. 3:1–2; 4:17; John 5:40).
-
- before the foundation of the world.
- ——————-Through God’s sovereign will before the creation of the world and, therefore, obviously independent of human influence and apart from any human merit, those who are saved have become eternally united with Christ Jesus.
- Cf. 1 Pet. 1:20; Rev. 13:8; 17:8.
-
- holy and blameless before him.
- —————————-This describes both a purpose and a result of God’s choosing those who are to be saved.
- Unrighteous persons are declared righteous, unworthy sinners are declared worthy of salvation, all because they are chosen “in him” (Christ).
This refers to Christ’s imputed righteousness granted to us (see notes on 2 Cor. 5:21; Phil. 3:9), a perfect righteousness which places believers in a holy and blameless position before God (Eph. 5:27; Col. 2:10), though daily living inevitably falls far short of his holy standard.
-
-
- In love. This phrase belongs at the start of Eph. 1:5, since it introduces the divine motive for God’s elective purpose. Cf. 2:4 and Deut. 7:8.

2 Thessalonians 2:13
Stand Firm
—————-
[13] But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.

Study Notes 📑
——————-

2 Thess. 2:13–14 be saved . . . sanctification.
- —————Just as there were specific elements in the character of the Antichrist (vv. 10–12), so there are characteristics of the saved.
-
- In these two verses, Paul swept through the features of salvation, noting that believers are “beloved by the Lord,” chosen for salvation from eternity past (cf. Rev. 13:8; 17:8), set apart from sin by the Spirit, and called to eternal glory,
- i.e., the sharing of the very “glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Paul’s main point in this section was to remind the Thessalonians that there was no need to be agitated or troubled (2 Thess. 2:2) thinking they had missed the rapture and thus were in the day of the Lord judgment.
-
- They were destined for glory, not judgment, and would not be included with those deceived and judged in that day.

[10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Study Notes 📑
———————
Eph. 2:10 created in . . . for good works.
- ————Good works cannot produce salvation but are subsequent and resultant God-empowered fruits and evidences of it (cf. John 15:8; Phil. 2:12–13; 2 Tim. 3:17; Titus 2:14; James 2:16–26).
-
-
- “which God prepared beforehand”.
- ————————-Like his salvation, a believer’s sanctification and good works were ordained before time began (see notes on Rom. 8:29–30).
-
Romans 8:29-30
- [29] For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
- ——-[30] And those whom he predestined he also called,
- and those whom he called he also justified,
- and those whom he justified he also glorified.

——上帝拣选信徒得救,并非因为他们有任何功德(太24:24;31;

Realizing Your Reward
———————————-

The sacrifices you make for Christ’s sake in this life will be abundantly compensated for in Heaven.

Mathew 5:11—12. "Blessed are you when men cast insults at you, and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, on account of Me. Rejoice, and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you"

God's promise for those who are persecuted for His sake is that their reward in heaven will be great (Matt. 5:11).
-
- Mathew 19:29. Jesus said, "Everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name's sake, shall receive many times as much, and shall inherit eternal life" (Matt. 19:29).

Focusing on that promise instead of your present circumstances is how you can experience happiness amid suffering.
- That was Paul's great confidence even as he faced certain death.
-
In 2 Timothy 4:8 he declares,
- "In the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing."

Another source of joy in trials is knowing that you share the fate of the prophets themselves (Matt. 5:12).
- Those godly men suffered untold hardships for proclaiming God's message.
- That's a noble group to be identified with!

One final word of encouragement from Matthew 5:11: persecution will not be incessant!
-
- Jesus said, "Blessed are you when. . . ."
-

- He(GOD) knows your human weaknesses and will supply the necessary grace and peace to get you through. That's why you can rejoice when otherwise you might be devastated and filled with grief.

If you are willing to make sacrifices now, you will receive incomparable rewards in the future. How shortsighted are those who protect themselves now by denying Christ or compromising His truth rather than sacrificing the present for the sake of eternal blessing and glory!

The Parable of the Tenants
*
* [33] “Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country.
*
[34] When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to get his fruit.
- [35] And the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another.
-
[36] Again he sent other servants, more than the first.
- And they did the same to them.
-
[37] Finally he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’
- [38] But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the heir.
- Come, let us kill him and have his inheritance.’
[39] And they took him and threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

Study notes 📑
——————

Matt. 21:33 a vineyard . . . a winepress.
- See Isa. 5:2.
-
Isaiah 5:2
- [2] He dug it and cleared it of stones,
- and planted it with choice vines;
- he built a watchtower in the midst of it,
- and hewed out a wine vat in it;
- and he looked for it to yield grapes,
- but it yielded wild grapes.
-
Jesus was clearly alluding to this OT passage, which would have been familiar to the Jewish leaders.
- The “vineyard” is a common symbol for the Jewish nation in Scripture.
- Here the landowner, representing God, developed the vineyard with great care, then leased it to “tenants,” representing the Jewish leaders.

Matt. 21:34 his servants.
- —————I.e., the OT prophets.

Matt. 21:35 beat one, killed another, and stoned another.
- ————Matthew often blends and simplifies details (see notes on v. 19; 8:28; 20:30).
-
From Mark’s account we learn that in Jesus’ telling of this story, three different slaves came individually.
- 1) The tenants “beat” the first one,
- 2) “struck” the second,
and
- 3) “killed” the third (Mark 12:2–5).
-
This corresponds to the Jewish rulers’ treatment of many of the OT prophets (1 Kings 22:24; 2 Chron. 24:20–21; 36:15–16; Neh. 9:26; Jer. 2:30).

1 Kings 22:24
* [24] Then Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah came near and struck Micaiah on the cheek and said, “How did the Spirit of the LORD go from me to speak to you?”

* 2 Chronicles 24:20-21
Joash’s Treachery
*
* [20] Then the Spirit of God clothed Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest, and he stood above the people, and said to them, “Thus says God, ‘Why do you break the commandments of the LORD, so that you cannot prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, he has forsaken you.’” [21] But they conspired against him, and by command of the king they stoned him with stones in the court of the house of the LORD.

2 Chronicles 36:15-16
* [15] The LORD, the God of their fathers, sent persistently to them by his messengers, because he had compassion on his people and on his dwelling place. [16] But they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words and scoffing at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD rose against his people, until there was no remedy.

Nehemiah 9:26
* [26] “Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their back and killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you, and they committed great blasphemies.

Jeremiah 2:30
* [30] In vain have I struck your children;
* they took no correction;
* your own sword devoured your prophets
* like a ravening lion.

Matt. 21:37 my son.

- 栽种上等葡萄树;

- 凿出一个榨酒池;

* [30] 我徒然击杀你的儿女;

* 他们不肯接受管教;

* 你自己的刀剑吞噬了你的先知,

* 如同残暴的狮子。

Risking True Peace.
——————————

True peace exists only where truth reigns.

Mathew 5:9. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God"

People often define peace as the absence of conflict, but God sees it differently.
- The absence of conflict is merely a truce, which might end overt hostilities but doesn't resolve the underlying issues.
- ——A truce simply introduces a cold war, which often drives the conflict underground, where it smolders until erupting in physical or emotional disaster.

James 3:17 says, "The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable."
- Godly wisdom, purity, and peace go hand- in-hand.
-
Peace is wisdom in action and is never established at the expense of righteousness.
- It brings righteousness to bear on the situation, seeking to eliminate the source of conflict and create right relationships.
-
Feuding parties will know true peace only when they are willing to admit that their bitterness and hatred is wrong and humbly seek God's grace to make things right.

Some people equate peacemaking with evading issues, but true peace can be very confrontive.
* 🚨In Matthew 10:34 Jesus says, "Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth;
I(Jesus) did not come to bring peace, but a sword."

That may seem to contradict Matthew 5:9, but it doesn't: Jesus knew that sinful people have to be confronted with the truth before they can experience peace.
- That can be a painful and difficult process because people usually have a hostile reaction to the gospel before they finally embrace it.
- Even believers will sometimes react negatively when confronted with God's truth.

Being a biblical peacemaker has its price.
- You can expect to upset unbelievers who openly oppose God's Word as well as believers who compromise its truth for the sake of maintaining "peace" among people of differing doctrinal persuasions.
-
- Some will call you narrow-minded and divisive for dealing with controversial issues.
-
- Some will misunderstand your motives or even attack you personally.
-
But that's been the path of every true peacemaker— including our Lord Himself.
- Take heart and be faithful.
- Your efforts to bring peace show that you are a child of God.

Suggestions for Prayer 🙏

Ask God for the boldness never to compromise His truth.
Pray for those you know who are suffering for the sake of the gospel.

Read Luke 12:51-53, noting how the gospel can bring division even among families.

Luke 12:51—53.
51 Do you think that I have come to give peace on earth?
- No, I tell you, but rather division.
-
52 For from now on in one house there will be five divided, three against two and two against three.
-
53 They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law." (Luke 12:51, ESV)

Study Notes for Mathew 10:34. ✍️📑
——————————————

Matt. 10:34 not . . . peace, but a sword.
- ——————-Though the ultimate end of the gospel is peace with God (John 14:27; Rom. 8:6),
- ——the immediate result of the gospel is frequently conflict.
-
Conversion to Christ can result in strained family relationships (Matt. 10:35–36), persecution, and even martyrdom.
- ——Following Christ presupposes a willingness to endure such hardships (vv. 32–33; 37–39).
-
- Though he is called “Prince of Peace” (Isa. 9:6), Christ will have no one deluded into thinking that he calls believers to a life devoid of all conflict.

Matt. 10:35–36 Quoted from Mic. 7:6.

- Micah 7:6
- [6] for the son treats the father with contempt,
- the daughter rises up against her mother,
- the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
- a man’s enemies are the men of his own house.

Matt. 10:38 take his cross.
- ———-Here is Jesus’ first mention of the word “cross” to his disciples (see note on 16:21).
- To them it would have evoked a picture of a violent, degrading death (see note on 27:31).
-
- Jesus was demanding total commitment from them—even unto physical death—and making this call to full surrender a part of the message they were to proclaim to others.
- This same call to life-or-death devotion to Christ is repeated in 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23; 14:27.
For those who come to Christ with self-renouncing faith, there will be true and eternal life (Matt. 10:39).

Matt. 10:40 Whoever receives you receives me.
- ————Christ lives in his people.
- They also come in his name as his ambassadors (2 Cor. 5:20).
- Therefore, how they are treated is how he is treated (cf. Matt. 18:5; 25:45; Luke 9:48).

Matthew 18:5
[5] “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me,

Matthew 25:45
[45] Then he will answer them, saying, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.’

Luke 9:48
[48] and said to them, “Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me.
- For he who is least among you all is the one who is great.”
