There is something special about a meal prepared with care - especially when every packet carries a little more than food.

Our Annual Sri Lankan Rice Packet Fundraising Event is back, bringing together the flavours we grew up with, the spirit of dāna, and the strength of our temple community.

By ordering a rice packet, you are not simply buying a meal. You are helping support the continued development of the Buddhist Vihara Society of British Columbia Temple, a place for Dhamma, meditation, community, culture, and future generations to come together.

Rice Packet - CA$18
Choose from Chicken, Fish Ambulthiyal, or Polos Ambula (Jackfruit), served with basmati yellow rice and a selection of traditional Sri Lankan accompaniments.

Optional add-on: Roast Paan + Pol Sambol - CA$10

Pick-up: Sunday, September 20, 2026

The Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta offers a detailed guide to understanding the body, feelings, mind, and mental phenomena — and connects this practice with the Four Noble Truths.

It reminds us that mindfulness is not simply about being present. It is a way of seeing our experience more clearly, understanding suffering, and gradually cultivating the wisdom that leads beyond it.

Swipe through for a simple introduction to this important teaching.

Whether you are new to the Dhamma or have been practising for years, you are always welcome to learn, reflect, and practise with our temple community.

May this Dhamma be a source of peace and wisdom to all.
Theruwan Saranai. 🙏

What actually happens when you meditate?
Meditation isn't about emptying the mind or forcing it to go blank. It's about learning to see the mind clearly.

The method is simple: you rest your attention on the breath. When the mind wanders and it will you gently begin again.

Here's the part most people miss: that returning, again and again, is the practice. Not the stillness itself.

A wandering mind isn't failure, noticing it and coming back is the whole exercise. This is why "I'm bad at meditating" usually just means "I'm meditating." Over time, this steadies the mind and softens how we meet each moment.

Learn it with us gently guided, no experience needed. Come as you are.

Mindfulness is more than simply trying to “stay in the present.”

In the Satipatthana Sutta, the Buddha teaches four foundations through which mindfulness can be cultivated:

The Body: becoming aware of the body, breath, posture, and physical experience.
Feelings: noticing whether an experience is pleasant, unpleasant, or neutral.
The Mind: observing the condition of the mind without immediately being carried away by it.
Dhammas: observing the patterns and qualities of experience with greater understanding.

Through this practice, we gradually learn to see our experiences more clearly, as they arise, change, and pass away. Four foundations of mindfulness. One path of careful observation, understanding, and wisdom.

May this be an invitation to learn a little more about the Buddha’s teachings and bring greater mindfulness into everyday life.

🪷 Why does this robe-offering happen only once a year?

The Katina Pinkama is one of the most significant events in the Theravāda Buddhist year. It follows Vassa — the three-month rains retreat when monks remain in one place to focus on practice.

When the retreat ends, lay devotees come together to offer robes to the Sangha. What makes it special: the robe is offered not to a single monk, but to the whole community, who then designate one to receive it.

At its heart, Katina is dāna — generosity — and the joy of coming together.

May all beings share in this merit🙏

Why is Bojjhaṅga Pirith often chanted during times of illness?

In the Buddhist tradition, Bojjhaṅga Pirith is closely associated with comfort, reflection, and wellbeing. The chanting brings attention to the Seven Factors of Awakening — mindfulness, investigation of Dhamma, energy, joy, tranquility, concentration, and equanimity.

These qualities help steady the mind, especially during difficult times, and remind us that even when the body is struggling, the Dhamma can still bring calm, strength, and clarity.
