As Surrey prepares for the October 2026 municipal election, our community has an important opportunity to support leaders who understand the needs of Surrey’s diverse communities.

For Masjid Umar Bin Khattab Islamic Society, one of the most important issues facing us today is the future of our property at 10644 City Parkway. This is not just a building—it is the only Afghan-owned non-profit society property in Western Canada, established by Afghan families who fled persecution and the Soviet invasion and who founded the original Afghan Canadian Association of B.C. in the 1980s. For more than 40 years, this organization has served Afghan immigrants, refugees, Muslim families, and the broader community by providing a place for worship, education, settlement support, cultural programs, employment assistance, youth mentorship, family counselling, and community integration.

Today, many Afghan newcomers arriving after fleeing the Taliban rely on this facility as a safe place to learn English, find employment, access community resources, and build a future in Canada. The society has also supported Afghans who stood alongside Canada as interpreters, judges, prosecutors, ministers, public servants, and members of allied efforts during some of the most difficult periods of conflict. Many risked everything because of their support for democratic values and Canada’s mission abroad.

We are deeply concerned that the City of Surrey is pursuing the expropriation of this property without providing a clear and viable relocation solution for the society and the community it serves. Losing this location would mean losing a vital support system for Afghan immigrants, refugees, Muslim families, seniors, women, youth, and vulnerable individuals. At a time when Afghan youth face challenges including isolation, gang recruitment, and substance abuse, this centre remains one of the few places where they can find guidance, mentorship, and community support.

This is why it is important to have community-minded leaders at City Hall who understand the significance of this institution and the sacrifices made by Afghan Canadians. We are encouraged by Bilal Cheema’s commitment to listening to communities and understanding the importance of preserving spaces that serve newcomers and vulnerable residents. Alongside Linda Annis for Mayor, we believe there is an opportunity for meaningful dialogue, fairness, and a practical solution that respects the history and contributions of the Afghan community.

The Afghan Canadian Association of B.C., now operating as Masjid Umar Bin Khattab Islamic Society, is one of the oldest Afghan organizations in British Columbia and remains a symbol of resilience, service, and community building. We ask residents and decision-makers to recognize what is at stake and to support efforts to ensure this vital community institution has a future.

We encourage all residents to become informed, get involved, and participate in the municipal election this October.

در حالی که شهر سوری برای انتخابات شاروالی در ماه اکتوبر ۲۰۲۶ آماده می‌شود، جامعه ما فرصت مهمی دارد تا از رهبرانی حمایت کند که نیازهای جوامع مختلف سوری را درک می‌کنند.

برای مسجد عمر بن خطاب، یکی از مهم‌ترین موضوعات امروز آینده ملک ما در 10644 City Parkway است. این مکان تنها یک ساختمان نیست؛ بلکه تنها ملک متعلق به یک نهاد غیرانتفاعی افغان در غرب کانادا است که ریشه آن به انجمن اصلی افغان‌های بریتیش کلمبیا در دهه ۱۹۸۰ بازمی‌گردد. این نهاد توسط خانواده‌های افغانی تأسیس شد که از جنگ، آزار و اشغال افغانستان توسط اتحاد جماهیر شوروی گریخته بودند و بیش از ۴۰ سال است که به مهاجران، پناهندگان، خانواده‌های مسلمان و جامعه گسترده‌تر خدمات ارائه می‌کند.

این مرکز برای هزاران افغان تازه‌وارد که از حاکمیت طالبان فرار کرده‌اند، محلی امن برای آموزش زبان، یافتن کار، دریافت خدمات اجتماعی، حفظ هویت فرهنگی و ادغام در جامعه کانادا بوده است. همچنین این نهاد از افغان‌هایی حمایت کرده است که در کنار کانادا به عنوان مترجم، قاضی، سارنوال، وزیر، کارمند دولتی و همکار نیروهای کانادایی خدمت کرده‌اند و در دشوارترین شرایط جان خود را به خطر انداخته‌اند.

ما عمیقاً نگران هستیم که شهر سوری در پی تملک این ملک باشد، بدون آن‌که راه‌حل روشن و عملی برای انتقال و اسکان مجدد این نهاد و خدمات آن ارائه کند. از دست دادن این مکان به معنای از دست دادن یکی از مهم‌ترین مراکز حمایتی برای مهاجران افغان، پناهندگان، خانواده‌های مسلمان، زنان، سالمندان و جوانان خواهد بود. در زمانی که برخی از جوانان افغان با خطر انزوا، جذب باندهای جنایی و اعتیاد روبه‌رو هستند، این مرکز یکی از معدود مکان‌هایی است که می‌توانند در آن راهنمایی، حمایت و احساس تعلق پیدا کنند.

به همین دلیل حضور رهبرانی در شورای شهر که اهمیت این نهاد و فداکاری‌های افغان‌های کانادایی را درک کنند، بسیار مهم است. ما از تمایل بلال چیما برای شنیدن صدای جوامع مختلف و درک اهمیت حفظ مراکزی که به مهاجران و افراد آسیب‌پذیر خدمت می‌کنند، استقبال می‌کنیم. در کنار لیندا انیس برای مقام شاروال سوری، ما امیدواریم که زمینه برای گفت‌وگوی سازنده، برخورد منصفانه و یافتن راه‌حلی عملی فراهم شود؛ راه‌حلی که تاریخ، خدمات و سهم ارزشمند جامعه افغان را محترم بشمارد.

انجمن افغان‌های بریتیش کلمبیا که امروز تحت نام مسجد عمر بن خطاب فعالیت می‌کند، یکی از قدیمی‌ترین نهادهای افغان در بریتیش کلمبیا است و نمادی از استقامت، خدمت و همبستگی جامعه افغان به شمار می‌رود. ما از شهروندان و تصمیم‌گیرندگان می‌خواهیم اهمیت این موضوع را درک کرده و از تلاش‌ها برای حفظ آینده این مرکز حیاتی حمایت کنند.

از همه شهروندان دعوت می‌کنیم که آگاهانه در انتخابات شاروالی ماه اکتوبر شرکت کرده و صدای خود را به گوش مسئولان برسانند.

We were honoured to welcome Surrey City Councillor Linda Annis to our Eid Al-Adha Prayer on May 27, 2026.

Councillor Annis has served the people of Surrey for many years through her work in public service, community safety, and local government. She currently serves on Surrey City Council and has officially announced her candidacy to become the next Mayor of Surrey in the 2026 municipal election.

At Masjid Umar Bin Khattab Islamic Society (MUBKIS), we appreciate leaders who take the time to engage with our community and celebrate important occasions with us. Eid Al-Adha is a day of faith, sacrifice, gratitude, and unity, and we were pleased to have Councillor Annis join thousands of worshippers and community members on this special occasion.

ما افتخار داشتیم که در نماز عید قربان به تاریخ ۲۷ می ۲۰۲۶ از لیندا انیس، عضو شورای شهر سوری، استقبال کنیم.

خانم انیس سال‌ها در خدمت مردم سوری در بخش‌های مختلف از جمله خدمات اجتماعی، امنیت جامعه و حکومت محلی فعالیت کرده است. ایشان در حال حاضر عضو شورای شهر سوری بوده و رسماً نامزدی خود را برای مقام شهردار شهر سوری در انتخابات شهری ۲۰۲۶ اعلام نموده‌اند.

در مسجد عمر بن خطاب (MUBKIS)، ما از رهبران و مسئولانی که برای ارتباط با جامعه ما وقت می‌گذارند و در مناسبت‌های مهم دینی و فرهنگی حضور پیدا می‌کنند، قدردانی می‌کنیم. عید قربان روز ایمان، فداکاری، شکرگزاری و وحدت است و خوشحال بودیم که خانم انیس در کنار هزاران نمازگزار و اعضای جامعه ما در این روز ویژه حضور داشتند.

Eid prayer is more than a prayer—it is a reminder that life passes in the blink of an eye. Wealth, status, and worldly pleasures come and go, but the bonds of faith, family, and community are what truly endure.

When we gather shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters, we are reminded that we were not created to live as slaves to money, materialism, and endless distractions. Those who stay connected to their community, support one another, and stand united are investing in something far greater than this temporary world. One day, many will wish they could trade their wealth and possessions for more moments spent in worship, service, and meaningful connection. Eid is a reminder to choose what truly matters before time slips away.

نماز عید تنها یک نماز نیست؛ بلکه یادآوری است که زندگی در یک چشم برهم زدن می‌گذرد. ثروت، مقام و لذت‌های دنیا روزی از بین می‌روند، اما ایمان، خانواده و پیوندهای اجتماعی باقی می‌مانند.

وقتی در کنار برادران و خواهران خود برای نماز عید جمع می‌شویم، به یاد می‌آوریم که برای بردگی مال، مادی‌گرایی و سرگرمی‌های بی‌پایان آفریده نشده‌ایم. کسانی که با جامعه خود ارتباط دارند، از یکدیگر حمایت می‌کنند و در کنار هم می‌ایستند، برای چیزی بسیار ارزشمندتر از این دنیای فانی سرمایه‌گذاری می‌کنند. روزی بسیاری آرزو خواهند کرد که ای کاش بخشی از ثروت و دارایی خود را با لحظاتی بیشتر در عبادت، خدمت و همدلی با دیگران عوض می‌کردند. عید یادآوری می‌کند که پیش از آنکه زمان از دست برود، آنچه واقعاً مهم است

Alhamdulillah, Eid Al-Adha 2026 at Masjid Umar Bin Khattab Islamic Society was a beautiful and successful gathering, with more than 3,000 brothers, sisters, and families coming together to celebrate this blessed day.

We would like to sincerely thank our respected President, Mohammad Karim Nastoh, Mawlawi Abdul Azim, our hardworking and dedicated Board of Directors, and all of the volunteers whose efforts made this Eid possible.

A special thank you to our brother Hasib Noori of Noori Tires, along with all of the volunteers in the orange vests who worked tirelessly behind the scenes—helping with parking, organization, safety, setup, cleanup, and serving the community with sincerity and patience throughout the day.

We would also like to thank every other volunteer we may not have been able to mention individually. Your efforts, sacrifices, and support did not go unnoticed—you know who you are, and this successful Eid would not have been possible without you.

Events like this are only possible through unity, teamwork, sacrifice, and love for the community. May Allah (SWT) reward every volunteer, donor, organizer, and attendee who contributed to making this Eid a success.

الحمدلله، عید سعید قربان ۲۰۲۶ در مسجد عمر بن خطاب با موفقیت و شکوه فراوان برگزار شد و بیش از ۳۰۰۰ برادر، خواهر و خانواده در این روز مبارک گردهم آمدند تا عید را در کنار یکدیگر تجلیل نمایند.

از صمیم قلب از رئیس محترم ما محمد کریم نستوه، مولوی عبدالعظیم، هیئت مدیره پرتلاش و متعهد مسجد، و تمامی داوطلبانی که در برگزاری این عید سهم داشتند، سپاسگزاری می‌کنیم.

تشکر ویژه از برادر عزیز ما حسیب نوری از نوری تایرز و همچنان تمامی داوطلبانی که با واسکت‌های نارنجی در پشت صحنه بی‌وقفه خدمت کردند؛ از تنظیم پارکینگ، سازماندهی، تأمین امنیت، آماده‌سازی، پاک‌کاری و خدمت صادقانه به جامعه اسلامی در طول روز.

Today we recognize and honor our respected President, Mohammad Karim Nastoh, one of the pioneers of the Afghan community in British Columbia.

Having immigrated to Canada nearly 50 years ago, he was among the small group of Afghan families who helped establish the Afghan Association and build the foundations of what would become a thriving Afghan community in British Columbia. A highly educated scholar, author, and poet with more than nine published books, he has dedicated much of his life to preserving Afghan culture, history, language, and community values.

When those first 10 or so Afghan families came together in the early years, they could never have imagined that their efforts would one day help create one of the largest and strongest Afghan communities in Western Canada. What began with a handful of families has grown into a vibrant community of tens of thousands, supported by institutions such as Masjid Umar Bin Khattab Islamic Society.

We are proud of our history and grateful to the early generation whose vision, sacrifice, and hard work helped build the foundation for future generations. May Allah (SWT) bless them all and reward them abundantly for their service to the community.

امروز با افتخار از محمد کریم نستوه، رئیس محترم ما و یکی از پیشگامان جامعه افغان در بریتیش کلمبیا، یاد و قدردانی می‌کنیم.

ایشان نزدیک به ۵۰ سال پیش به کانادا مهاجرت نمودند و از جمله معدود خانواده‌های افغان بودند که در تأسیس انجمن افغان‌ها و پایه‌گذاری جامعه افغان در بریتیش کلمبیا نقش مهمی ایفا کردند. استاد کریم نستوه شخصیتی فرهیخته، نویسنده و شاعر بوده و بیش از ۹ کتاب در زمینه فرهنگ، تاریخ، زبان و هویت افغان‌ها تألیف نموده‌اند.

در روزگاری که تنها حدود ۱۰ خانواده افغان در این ولایت حضور داشتند، هیچ‌کس تصور نمی‌کرد که تلاش‌ها و فداکاری‌های آنان روزی به شکل‌گیری یکی از بزرگ‌ترین و نیرومندترین جوامع افغان در غرب کانادا منجر شود. آنچه با چند خانواده آغاز شد، امروز به جامعه‌ای بزرگ و پویا با ده‌ها هزار عضو تبدیل شده است که نهادهایی مانند مسجد عمر بن خطاب به آن خدمت می‌کنند.

ما به تاریخ خود افتخار می‌کنیم و از نسل نخست افغان‌هایی که با دوراندیشی، فداکاری و تلاش‌های خستگی‌ناپذیر خود این بنیاد را برای نسل‌های آینده بنا نهادند، سپاسگزاریم. الله سبحانه و تعالی همه آنان را مورد رحمت و برکت خویش قرار دهد و خدمات‌شان را با بهت
