A couple of years ago, a conversation with Maxine Zasitko of the IERHA led to an idea that has since become the Northwest Interlake Health Advisory Committee.
Following that conversation, Maxine reached out to IERHA senior administration, and I contacted the Reeves of the RMs of West Interlake, Coldwell and St. Laurent to see if there was any interest in establishing a committee that would meet regularly to discuss health-care-related issues affecting our communities. All Reeves, IERHA senior administration agreed to meet and the committee was formed.
Our first meeting was held in July 2024 and the committee continues to meet four times a year. Today, the committee includes the Reeves and one Councillor from each of the four municipalities, along with Marion Ellis, CEO of the IERHA, and Maxine Zasitko, Manager of Health Services – Primary Care Operations.
Through these meetings, I have been able to have direct conversations about health-care services in our Municipality. These conversations go well beyond what is happening in our local hospitals. We have discussed physician recruitment, ambulance services, health-care staffing, training opportunities, personal care homes, home care, mental health services, housing shortages and the challenges of attracting healthcare professionals to our region.
I believe there is value in having these conversations proactively, rather than only reaching out when there is a problem.
There are certainly still challenges facing health care in rural Manitoba, and I don't expect that every issue can be resolved around a committee table. But I do believe that having municipal leaders and healthcare leadership sitting down together, asking questions, sharing perspectives and looking for solutions is an important part of it.
I'm pleased to have been involved in establishing this committee and look forward to continuing these conversations on behalf of the residents of the RM of Grahamdale.

Today, I drove to Gypsumville to pick up supplies from Rawluk’s Store.
Founded by Alex Rawluk in 1953, Rawluk’s Store has been a cornerstone of Gypsumville for more than 73 years.
It was great to see Warren and Chris Rawluk, the second- and third-generation owners, and I especially appreciated their help finding what I needed
