In our sermon series, we’ve moved from What Holiness Is, which we unpacked in our “Set Apart” series to What Holiness Looks Like, which will explore over the next few weeks in our “Shape of Holiness” series. In our new series, we find ourselves in the book of 1 Timothy as we explore what holy living looks like in the life of the believer and the church.

Paul’s first letter to Timothy starts with an important reminder: the goal is love.

As Lt. Chesney put it on Sunday, Paul is essentially reminding Timothy: “Don’t lose the plot!”

That reminder is especially important when we begin talking about holy living.

In 1 Timothy 1:1-7, Paul addresses some of the teaching and behaviour that had begun to distract the church. But his concern isn’t simply to create a list of objective criteria for determining who is- and isn’t- holy.

Instead, Paul points us toward something deeper:

“The goal of this instruction is love, which comes from a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith.”
- 1 Timothy 1:5

Holy living isn’t about learning how to look holy. It’s about allowing God to form something holy within us.

A pure heart. A good conscience. A sincere faith.
And from that transformed life comes love.

That’s the plot.

Consider your own holy living…
What does holiness actually look like when it takes shape in your life?

This is an important question for us to consider as we strive to be raised up disciples who are “rooted in holiness”. We want to be rooted in a holiness that takes the shape of love.

Today our staff and volunteers wore their Orange shirts in observation of National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

We acknowledge that Simcoe Community Church gathers and serves on the traditional and treaty lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and the Haudenosaunee peoples.

We recognize the Indigenous peoples who have cared for this land, and we honour their enduring presence, cultures, languages, and communities.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to pursue reconciliation, to seek justice, to love our neighbours, and to care faithfully for the world God has entrusted to us. May our acknowledgement be more than words, and may it lead us toward greater understanding, humility, relationship, and action.

We give thanks for those who have gone before us, for those who live and serve in this community today, and for the opportunity to seek a future marked by peace, dignity, and reconciliation.

Today we join in observation of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Today we join in observation of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

Today is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The Salvation Army recognizes the human rights violations Indigenous Peoples have suffered and acknowledges that ongoing injustice still occurs across Turtle Island. We want to recognize the hurt that has been done and make the most of this opportunity to celebrate Indigenous cultures and traditions.

We are set apart for God. We are set apart to shine.

Our holiness was not meant to be lived privately. Our holiness should be lived out loud. Through our holiness lived out, our lives become windows through which people can see something of the character of God. We become lighthouses that guide people to the true source of salvation and sanctification.

Church, how are you living out your holiness this week? How does your life show the transformation that is possible by the power of God?

We are disciples rooted in holiness, united in love and sent to participate in God's work in our community. We are a city on a hill.
