From the Celtic Christian Tradition:

Learning to need less
A heart that no longer competes
One of the deepest forms of poverty is not lacking possessions. It is needing to be loved in order to be at peace.
Many of our wounds are not caused by a lack of love, but by our dependence on it. We suffer when we are overlooked, forgotten, unappreciated, or replaced because we have made the love of others a condition for our happiness.
The more St Francis rooted his heart in Christ, the less he needed to be admired, affirmed, or preferred. He was no longer hungry for what people could give him because he had found the One who could never be taken from him.
To pray, "That others may be loved more than I," is not to despise yourself. It is to become so secure in God's love that you no longer need to compete for the love of others.
This is the freedom of St. Francis: to remain at peace whether praised or forgotten, welcomed or rejected, loved or left behind.
Because a heart resting in God is no longer starving for what the world cannot consistently provide.
O Jesus, meek and humble of heart, hear me. That others may be loved more than I, Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it. + Litany of Humility
