Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Today is the eight-hundredth anniversary of the death of St. Frances of Assisi.

Today is also his memorial day in the church calendar. Frances is beloved by Christians for his charity, kindness, love of the natural world, and the righteous simplicity of his life.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we remember the children who were taken from their families and communities and the Survivors whose lives continue to be shaped by the residential school system.

As Anglicans, we cannot separate ourselves from this history. Anglican churches and institutions were complicit in the residential school system, and we acknowledge the harm caused to Indigenous children, families and communities. We have a responsibility to continue learning, listening and working toward repair and right relationship.

Truth and reconciliation cannot be reduced to a single day. As Anglicans, we are called to keep learning, listening and taking action toward repair and right relationship.

Remembering is part of the work. So are listening, learning, changing and repairing.

May we honour Survivors and their families not only by remembering what happened, but by committing ourselves to the ongoing work of reconciliation.
