Augustine on the Eternal Peace, the Unending End

"For in this abode of weakness, and in these wicked days, this state of anxiety has also its use, stimulating us to seek with keener longing for that security where peace is complete and unassailable. There we shall enjoy the gifts of nature, that is to say, all that God the Creator of all natures has bestowed upon ours–gifts not only good, but eternal–not only of the spirit, healed now by wisdom, but also of the body renewed by the resurrection. There the virtues shall no longer be struggling against any vice or evil, but shall enjoy the reward of victory, the eternal peace which no adversary shall disturb. This is the final blessedness, this the ultimate consummation, the unending end."

Irenaeus writing sometime around AD 180:

"Four principal covenants were given to the human race: the first, of Adam before the deluge [flood]; the second, of Noe [Noah] after the deluge; the third, the law under Moses; and the fourth [in Christ], which renews man and recapitulates in itself all things, that is, which through the Gospel raises up and bears men on its wings to the heavenly kingdom." Augustine: "Beyond doubt, whatever interpretation is put on what is here expressed somewhat darkly in figurative language, ought to be in agreement with these most manifest things.... A deeply convicting passage about politics in the pulpit by R. L. Dabney:

A motivation for preaching on political issues is "that Christianity is designed to produce important collateral results on the social order of nations; as that social order reacts on Christianity. The answer is two-fold: that these secular results are the minor, the eternal redemption of souls is the chief end of God in his Gospel. He is a criminal servant who wilfully sacrifices the less to the greater. Second, the only innocent way (as the most efficient) in which the minister of religion can further these secular results, is so to preach each man's own sins and redemption to him as to make him personally a holy man." "When the world sees a portion or the whole of this sacred season [Sunday worship] abstracted from spiritual concerns, and given to secular agitations, and that by the appointed guardians of sacred things, it is the most emphatic possible disclosure of unbelief. A Cure for Pride of Righteousness

The God who preserves us from sin is the same God who forgives us of our sin:

"Would any man, considering his own weakness, dare to attribute his chastity or his innocence to his own powers and so love Thee less–as if he did not need the same mercy as those who return to Thee after sin? If any man has heard Thy voice and followed it and done none of the things he finds me here recording and confessing, still he must not scorn me: for I am healed by the same doctor who preserved him from falling into sickness, or at least into such grievous sickness. "The sound and safe and religious and truth-loving mind will readily apply itself to the things God placed within the power of men and granted to our knowledge. It will make progress in them because by daily exercise it will make easy for itself the acquisition of knowledge. These are the things that come under our eyes and are expressed in the Sacred Scriptures clearly and unambiguously by the words themselves." (Against the Heresies, 2.27.1)

Augustine on the Ark as a Type of Christ:

"God commanded [Noah]... to make an ark, in which he might be rescued from the destruction of the flood, along with his family... who, in obedience to God's command, came to him into the ark: this is certainly a figure of the city of God sojourning in this world; that is to say, of the church, which is rescued by the wood on which hung the Mediator of God and men, the man Christ Jesus. For even the very dimensions [of the ark], in length, breadth, and height, represent the human body in which He came, as it had been foretold. For the length of the human body, from the crown to the head to the sole of the foot, is six times its breadth from side to side, and ten times its depth in thickness, measuring from back to front.... And therefore the ark was made 300 cubits in length, 50 in breadth, and 30 in height. And its having a door made in the side of it certainly signified the wound which was made when the side of the Crucified was pierced with the spear: for by this those who come to Him enter; for thence flowed the sacraments by which those who believed are initiated."
