Scripture reveals one of the most profound and glorious truths ever known to humanity: God defeats evil not merely by raw power, but by perfect, unsearchable wisdom. The sovereignty of God is so complete, so holy, and so absolute that He is able to turn the very schemes of Satan into the instruments...

And the last in our series about the birth of Jesus (Christmas) -

Matthew 1:18-25

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

The birth of Jesus (Christmas) promises Joy from God ( #3 in series) (Part 2)

Psalm 146 ( NIV)

Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord, my soul. I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live.

Do not put your trust in princes, in human beings, who cannot save. When their spirit departs, they return to the ground; on that very day their plans come to nothing.

Blessed are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord their God. He is the Maker of heaven and earth, the sea, and everything in them— he remains faithful forever. He upholds the cause of the oppressed and gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets prisoners free, the Lord gives sight to the blind, the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down, the Lord loves the righteous.

The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked. The Lord reigns forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations.

Praise the Lord.

Matthew 11:2-11 (NIV)

When John, who was in prison, heard about the deeds of the Messiah, he sent his disciples to ask him, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

Jesus replied, “Go back and report to John what you hear and see: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear fine clothes are in kings’ palaces. Then what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: “ ‘I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way before you.’

Truly I tell you, among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet whoever is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

The birth of Jesus (Christmas) promises Joy from ( #3 in series) (Part 1)

Isaiah 35:1-10
The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom.Like the crocus, it will burst into bloom;it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy.

The glory of Lebanon will be given to it,the splendor of Carmel and Sharon;they will see the glory of the Lord, the splendor of our God.

Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retributionhe will come to save you.”

Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.

Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs.

In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.

And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way. The unclean will not journey on it; wicked fools will not go about on it. No lion will be there, nor any ravenous beast; they will not be found there. But only the redeemed will walk there, and those the Lord has rescued will return. They will enter Zion with singing; everlasting joy will crown their heads. Gladness and joy will overtake them, and sorrow and sighing will flee away.

The birth of Jesus - moving from an eternal invisible promise to a physical reality - God's promises will never fail

Luke 1:26-34, 36-37 NIV (Reading for Sunday December 14)

In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.

The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”. Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.

He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

[But the angel replied] Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month.

For no word from God will ever fail.”

The birth of Jesus (Christmas) promises the Peace of Righteousness and Justice for Oppressed ( #2 in series) (Part 2)

Psalm 72:1-7 and 18-19

Endow the king with your justice, O God,the royal son with your righteousness. May he judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice.

May the mountains bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness. May he defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; may he crush the oppressor.

May he endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. May he be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the earth.

In his days may the righteous flourish and prosperity abound till the moon is no more.

Praise be to the Lord God, the God of Israel, who alone does marvelous deeds. Praise be to his glorious name forever;may the whole earth be filled with his glory.

Amen and Amen.

The birth of Jesus (Christmas) promises the Peace of God's Righteousness and Justice for the Oppressed ( #2 in series) (Part 1)

Isaiah 11:1-10
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;from his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord— and he will delight in the fear of the Lord.
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.
Righteousness will be his belt and faithfulness the sash around his waist. The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together;and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the cobra’s den,and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest.
They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.

The birth of Jesus (Christmas) gives us Hope ( #1 in series) (Part 2)

Psalm 122 The Hope of Peace Within

I rejoiced with those who said to me,“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

Our feet are standing in your gates, Jerusalem. Jerusalem is built like a city that is closely compacted together. That is where the tribes go up—the tribes of the Lord—to praise the name of the Lord according to the statute given to Israel.

There stand the thrones for judgment, the thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:“May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.” For the sake of my family and friends, I will say, “Peace be within you.” For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your prosperity.
(NIV)

Matthew 24:36-44 The Hope of Rescue

“But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
(NIV)

Jesus invites you to renewed Hope.

The birth of Jesus is Good news

Prologue to a series of posts of scriptures that tell of Jesus' birth

Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel (Good News) I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain. For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 1Cor.15.1-4

From the Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells of Jesus the Christ who was called Immanuel which means God with us but the Bible itself gives no special name to the event of Jesus birth.

The earliest historical record of the name Christmas (Cristes mæsse) as the time of Jesus' birth is around the year 1138 AD.

However, records from 2nd & 3rd Centuries show that early Christians celebrated Jesus' birth just not on a specific day,

December 25 was set as the date for a holy day to celebrate Christ's birth in the 4th century ( sometime in the 330's) during the reign of Constantine.

(Some have suggested that Christmas originated as Roman (pagan) winter solstice festivals. However it seems more likely that the date was deliberately chosen to coincide with pagan celebrations to displace and replace them with a holiday (holy day) celebrating the birth of the Christ.)

Sadly, since the late 19th Century and early 20th century, Christmas has become increasingly secularized and commercialized and the original intent of celebrating the birth of Jesus has often been pushed aside and lost in a flurry of secular activities )

However, those who have placed their trust in the reality of the Gospel will continue to proclaim the Good news of Jesus coming to this world as Immanuel

• Isaiah 7:14: "Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and will have a son, and will call him Immanuel".
• Matthew 1:23: "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel" (which means, "God with us")

This series of posts provides a starting point for any interested in more fully understanding this good news.

It makes no comment on personal choices about how or even whether you choose to celebrate this holiday called Christmas but there is a desire to invite all to put Christ not only into Christmas but also into every day in every word and action in our lives.

Please message us if you have any comments or questions on this post

The birth of Jesus (Christmas) gives us Hope ( #1 in series)

Isaiah 2:1-5

This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem: In the last days the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be established as the highest of the mountains;it will be exalted above the hills, and all nations will stream to it.

Many peoples will come and say,“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,to the temple of the God of Jacob. He will teach us his ways,so that we may walk in his paths.”

The law will go out from Zion, the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. He will judge between the nations and will settle disputes for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore.

Come, descendants of Jacob, let us walk in the light of the Lord.
