This September 1 — the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation — St. Francis, patron of ecology, keeps watch over "Assisi by the Bay." 🕊️🌍

My sculpture "St. Francis Embracing the World," the largest statue of St. Francis in the United States, now stands in the plaza of St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco — the city that bears his name.

In Laudato Si', Pope Francis wrote words that could describe this very image:
"Our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us."
That is what I hope this work says in bronze — an invitation to embrace our common home, and its most vulnerable, the way Francis did. 🙏
