ST. PHILIP NERI
1515–1595

“Holiness is not the absence of joy.”

St. Philip Neri discovered holiness not by becoming severe and distant, but by remaining deeply human, joyful, and approachable.
Though he guided great saints and spoke wisely about the spiritual life, he was also known for his humor, simplicity, and light-hearted spirit. One of his favorite books was not only the New Testament—but also a joke book. At a time when many associated holiness with stiffness and seriousness, Philip showed that joy, laughter, and humility could also lead people closer to God.

As he learned to combine wisdom with warmth, his witness became more attractive and alive. In bringing joy into holiness and humility into leadership, he became the person God was calling him to be.

Question for Reflection

Do I quietly assume that holiness means becoming harsh, serious, or emotionally distant?

Or am I allowing God to form in me a holiness that is joyful, humble, and deeply human?

"Indeed, the Spirit of the risen One is not poured out once and for all, but constantly.
Just as the Eucharist is the living presence of Christ, who nourishes us unceasingly, so too does the Holy Spirit imprint his character upon us in Baptism, which makes us Christians; in Confirmation, which establishes us as witnesses; and in Holy Orders, which constitutes ministers and shepherds for God’s people." - Pope Leo XIV, PENTECOST SUNDAY | HOLY MASS.
