Lutheran Theological Seminary Saskatoon

Lutheran Theological Seminary Saskatoon Preparing people for Christ-centered leadership and witness for God's mission in the ELCIC and beyond. Discover us, and take up the Challenge.

Lutheran Theological Seminary, a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada, nurtures and challenges all people for Christ-centered leadership and witness for God's mission in the world. Our base is in Saskatoon, Canada. Our students are everywhere. We offer online and intensive courses - and our in-person courses are in a variety of places. Live where you are; study with us! LTS is an

inclusive community and offers hospitality to all who participate in our programs of study. As disciples of Christ committed to public leadership among God's people in diverse and challenging cultural contexts, we eagerly learn from and welcome one another's diversity, including, but not limited to, theological perspective, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender identity, relationship status, age, physical ability, social and economic status and sexual orientation. Together with the Anglican and United Churches of Canada (all located on the University of Saskatchewan campus), we form the Saskatoon Theological Union, a uniquely Western Canadian & ecumenical partnership.

Convocation is a time to give thanks to God for our graduates, for the communities that have formed and supported them, and for the work to which they are being called.

At LTS, we celebrate this work as part of our shared life with the churches and communities of Western Canada. Our classroom is Western Canada, and our graduates carry their learning into ministry, leadership, and service across this wider landscape.

We hope you can join us.

"Professors often receive e-mails from publishers promoting new books, and one that recently caught my eye was E.K. Strawser’s You Were Never Meant to Lead Alone: The Power of Shared Leadership, published last year by InterVarsity Press.

Strawser is a co-vocational lead pastor at a non-denominational church in Honolulu, as well as a physician, and writes about how leadership in ministry is done as a community. The book offers a well-balanced combination of scholarly research and practical experience, including a critical analysis of her early days in a male-dominated megachurch leadership structure.

I have found this book to be a good conversation partner with Kristina Lizardy-Hajbi’s Unraveling Religious Leadership: Power, Authority, and Decoloniality (Fortress Press, 2024), which I currently use in my Leading Missional Communities course. Lizardy-Hajbi and I are both members of the Academy of Religious Leadership.

Together, these books set forward a healthy approach to leadership that challenges dominant models built around titles, gatekeeping, and hierarchy. Some of Strawser’s theological foundations do not align with my own approach, which does not surprise me with an IVP book, so I would recommend it as long as readers bring it into dialogue with their own theological traditions." Rev. Dr. Kyle Schiefelbein-Guerrero

Convocation is getting close!

Around the LTS offices, the signs are everywhere: gowns, hoods, diplomas, seals, programs, lists, and all the small details that help mark a very significant day.

Convocation is more than a ceremony. It is a moment to give thanks to God for the learning, formation, perseverance, and calling of our students. It is also a reminder that theological education is never only about the classroom. It is about the people, communities, and ministries our graduates are being prepared to serve.

We give thanks to God for the work already completed, the work still being prepared, and the joy of celebrating together soon.

Yesterday, LTS hosted the monthly gathering of the Saskatoon Lutheran (ELCIC) clergy. The gathering began with worship in the chapel, led by Dr. KSG, which reflected on Rogationtide and the relationships we have with creation. Following worship, the clergy met around food and fellowship to discuss what has been going on in ministry this past month and to look ahead at what the summer has in store.

Rev. Dr. Bill Harrison is working with the ABT Synod to help congregations think carefully about declining participation and the future of church life.

These workshops will explore how broader social changes are affecting churches and other voluntary organizations. Participants will have space for small group conversation about the impact of these shifts in their own contexts.

Rev. Dr. Harrison will also introduce a different way of thinking about the good news and the church, shaped around four kinds of transformation. He will share “A Gospel Vision Statement,” a tool that helps church organizations assess their real capacities and possibilities as they reimagine their future.

All denominations are welcome to attend.

On the weekend of April 25-26, President Harrison led B.C. workshops called "Let's Go to Work," based on his book, Leadership in a Shrinking Church. On Saturday, people from several churches in Vancouver met at Spirit of Life, and on Sunday, people from the Victoria area met at Church of the Cross. This is exciting work. Doing it together is a lot of fun.

Thanks to all who came!

The Saskatoon Theological Union gathered this April for a two-day Forum focused on shaping the future of theological education in our shared context.

Over April 21–22, participants engaged in worship, collaborative design, and deep conversation around mission, values, and the possibility of further integration. The Forum created space not only for strategic work, but also for relationship-building across our ecumenical community.

From presentations on current realities to hands-on prototyping sessions, the schedule reflected a commitment to thoughtful discernment and shared leadership.

We are grateful for the leadership of convenor Laureen Wray, for our faithful board members, for our students, for our faculty, and for our administrative team. You all contributed to this important work.

The Winter edition of LTS Today reflects on a theme that is increasingly central to the community’s life: the significance and benefit of the Saskatoon Theological Union.

Set within a season of reflection, the issue explores how shared life across traditions deepens formation and broadens the church’s witness in the world.

Highlights include reflections from President Harrison on multidenominational life within the STU, a contribution from Board member Rev. Chris Bishopp on the church’s growing ecumenical shape, student voices throughout the STU, an article by Rev. Dr. Daranne Harris on the Doctor of Ministry program, and a reflection on this year’s encouraging Advent Appeal.

Together, these pieces portray a community learning, praying, and preparing for ministry across denominational lines, for the sake of the gospel.

This month, a landmark collection of women's theology was published by Wiley-Blackwell. The Women's Christian Theology Reader gathers primary sources on core Christian doctrines written exclusively by women from the second century to the present, presenting theology through poetry, sermons, hymns, and visual art as well as traditional theological prose. Each section concludes with commentary by current women theologians. Rev. Dr. Driedger Hesslein's commentary on the work of Katharina Schütz Zell, a woman Reformer, is included in the section on Christology.

Professor Driedger Hesslein says, "I am very excited to have this work, the first of its kind, to use as a foundational text for theology courses for years to come. I also encourage pastors and deacons who are looking to build on their previous seminary education to buy this book as a rich expansion to their prior learning."
