ADRA Canada is deeply saddened by the passing of our founder and former executive director, Pastor John Maxwell Howard, who died on Saturday, July 25.
Pastor Howard founded ADRA Canada in 1985, guided by his Christian faith and a conviction that compassion must be translated into action. His vision, determination and humanitarian leadership laid the foundation for an organization that has since served millions of people in Canada and around the world.
“Pastor John Howard’s vision, faith and determination laid the foundation for everything ADRA Canada has become,” said Steve Matthews, Chief Executive Officer of ADRA Canada. “He understood that compassion must be expressed through action, and his commitment to serving people with dignity continues to shape our work today. His legacy will live on through the work of ADRA Canada for generations to come.”
In 2002, Pastor Howard was presented with the Meritorious Service Medal by then Governor General Adrienne Clarkson in recognition of his leadership in establishing ADRA Canada and advancing humanitarian service around the world.
Pastor Howard will be remembered not only for founding an organization, but also for showing what is possible when faith, compassion and determined action come together in service to others.
The board and staff of ADRA Canada extend their deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, friends and all those whose lives were touched by his ministry.
