Saskatoon Buddha Meditation Centre

Saskatoon Buddha Meditation Centre We are a meditation centre and monastery where you can learn the original teachings of the Buddha. All of our activities are free and open to the public.

The Saskatoon Buddha Meditation Centre is part of the Mahamevnawa Buddhist Monastery (pronounced maha may-oo NA-wa). We offer the spiritual practices of morality, meditation, and wisdom taught by the Buddha freely to all who are interested. Anyone from any background is welcome to come and learn. Our lay community is led by monks trained in the ancient scriptures taught by the Buddha and his fully

enlightened disciples. Through a variety if activities they help people to understand these teachings and apply them to life in the modern world. The Buddha taught that all of life's problems are rooted in greed, hatred and delusion. He saw that through eliminating our clinging to the impermanent things of the world, we can achieve true happiness in this life. This is a happiness not dependent on getting more and more things. Without a real understanding of the nature of suffering in the world, it is hard to recognize that the ordinary happiness we usually depend on is not all there is. All of our teachings and activities are offered to the public at no charge. Please visit our website at www.mahamevnawasaskatoon.com. Our organization is run by the generous donations of the lay devotees and well-wishes. If you wish to make a donation please do so through the link below. You can specify your contribution towards monks needs (i.e. medicine, transportation), utility of the monks’ house (electricity, water, heating, telephone), or even make a genaral contribution. If you’re donating to commemorate a special occasion or to share merits with a loved one, please indicate that and we will make sure to share blessings with you and your loved ones. https://www.mahamevnawasaskatoon.com/donations.html

“I tell you, monks, there are two people who are not easy to repay. Which two? Your mother & father. Even if you were to carry your mother on one shoulder & your father on the other shoulder for 100 years, and were to look after them by anointing, massaging, bathing, & rubbing their limbs, and they were to defecate & urinate right there [on your shoulders], you would not in that way pay or repay your parents. If you were to establish your mother & father in absolute sovereignty over this great earth, abounding in the seven treasures, you would not in that way pay or repay your parents. Why is that? Mother & father do much for their children. They care for them, they nourish them, they introduce them to this world. But anyone who rouses his unbelieving mother & father, settles & establishes them in conviction; rouses his unvirtuous mother & father, settles & establishes them in virtue; rouses his stingy mother & father, settles & establishes them in generosity; rouses his foolish mother & father, settles & establishes them in discernment: To this extent one pays & repays one’s mother & father.”

"A monk who possesses three qualities is capable of attaining unarisen wholesome states and of developing wholesome states already arisen. What three?

Here, a monk diligently applies himself to the sign of concentration in the morning, diligently applies himself to it at midday, and diligently applies himself to it in the evening. Because of these three qualities, he is capable of attaining and developing wholesome states.”

"“The attentive say that shackle is not strong
that’s made of iron, wood, or knots.
But obsession with jeweled earrings,
concern for your partners and children:

this, say the attentive, is a strong shackle
dragging the indulgent down, hard to escape.
Having cut this one too they go forth,
unconcerned, having given up sensual pleasures.”
