Pentecost: The Feast of the Holy Spirit
On Pentecost we celebrate the descent of the Holy Spirit—the day the Church was born, and the apostles were strengthened to proclaim Christ with boldness. The “new law” is written on our hearts as the Spirit renews creation, fills the Church, and dwells within each of us.
In the Byzantine tradition, Pentecost is not only a past event—it is always happening. The Spirit comes to us in Baptism, Chrismation, the Eucharist, and in our daily prayer as we open ourselves to His guidance.
Prayer of St. Augustine
Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.
Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.
Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy.
Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.
Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy. Amen.
