On May 5, 2026, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, celebrates his 56th birthday. On this day, we invite you to learn more about the family of His Beatitude Sviatoslav—his parents, grandmother, and grandfather, who played an integral role in shaping him as a person, a Christian, and a priest. Today, the entire Church unites in a prayer of thanksgiving for the gift of the life and ministry of the Head of the UGCC. We also gratefully remember his parents—his mother Vira and his father Yuriy—who instilled in their son a faith in God, Christian values, and a love for his native Church and his people.

☝️15 Little-Known Facts About His Beatitude Sviatoslav

Fact No. 6️⃣: From Metropolitan Sheptytsky’s Forester to the Underground Seminary — the Family Story of His Beatitude Sviatoslav

This story began at the start of the 20th century. His Beatitude Sviatoslav’s grandfather on his father’s side worked as a forester on the estates of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky. He cared for Church forests in the Ivano-Frankivsk region (Broshniv-Osada and surrounding areas). It was a quiet yet faithful service to the Church during a time when Metropolitan Andrey was actively developing the resources of the Galician Metropolia.

His grandparents became true teachers of faith for young Sviatoslav. “Through them I entered into the life of the Church,” His Beatitude recalls. “They became for me a living encyclopedia of the history of the Church and of our people.”

Moreover, the grandparents of the future Head of the Church maintained close friendships with the family of the priest-martyr Oleksii Zarytsky, who often visited their home and celebrated the Divine Liturgy there.

In the 1980s, during the underground years of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the Shevchuk family was actively involved in the secret life of the Church. It was then that young Sviatoslav met Father Mykhailo Kosylo — an outstanding confessor of the faith who had twice been imprisoned in Soviet labor camps and served as one of the rectors of the underground seminary in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.

His Beatitude Sviatoslav recalls with particular warmth: “For me, Father Mykhailo Kosylo was a teacher of priestly sacrifice, zeal, and purity. Thanks to his charismatic example, in the best sense of the word, I entered the network of the underground seminary.”

Thus, through three generations — from Metropolitan Sheptytsky’s forester, through friendship with the priest-martyr Zarytsky, and the spiritual guidance of Fr. Kosylo — the path was laid for the future Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

This is the sixth fact.

🇨🇦 Christ is Risen!

Holy Pascha (Easter) and the entire Bright Week at our parish became a special time of joy, hope, and renewal for all of us. Together, we experienced these holy days in prayer, in community, and in the sincere joy of the Good News of Christ’s Resurrection.

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ is the heart of our faith — the victory of life over death, light over darkness. As it is written in Holy Scripture:

“Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen!” (Luke 24:5–6)

Throughout Bright Week, we had the opportunity to feel this truth even more deeply — in the festive services, shared gatherings, warm smiles, and the kindness in our hearts. These days reminded us that the Lord is always near, and His love overcomes all difficulties.

“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.” (John 11:25)

May the joy of the Resurrection fill our hearts not only during these days, but every day. May the light of Christ guide us in love, unity, and good deeds.

Sincere thanks to everyone who helped organize and take part in these celebrations. Together, we are building a living, warm, and strong community.

Christ is Risen! Truly He is Risen!

That Never Happened.
Canada’s First National Internment Operations…across Canada from 1914-1920

National Internment Commemoration Day

🇨🇦Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
As we continue through this autumn season of remembrance, let us take a moment to recall a solemn chapter in Canadian and Ukrainian Canadian history.

Each year on August 22, Canadians mark National Internment Commemoration Day (Вшанування Національного Дня Памʼяті Інтернованих) - a day to remember the first national internment operations in Canada (1914–1920). During this time, thousands of innocent people, including many Ukrainians, were unjustly interned in camps across our country under the War Measures Act.

Although today is October 28, we invite everyone in our parish community to pause, pray, and reflect on the hardships endured by those who suffered in these camps - and to ensure that such injustices are never forgotten or repeated.
Let us offer a short prayer for the souls of all who endured internment and for their descendants, who have carried their legacy forward with dignity and faith.

May this remembrance deepen our gratitude for the freedoms we enjoy today and strengthen our commitment to justice, peace, and compassion for all.

War Measures Act.
