Top of the day to you on Tuesday March 17th as we celebrate Saint Patrick's Day. Although St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, he was actually not Irish at all. He was born into a wealthy Romano-British family in Britain before being kidnapped by Irish raiders at the age of sixteen and forced into slavery. For six years he worked as a shepherd in Ireland before eventually escaping. Many popular stories about him are also myths, such as the tale that he drove snakes out of Ireland; in reality, snakes never lived there because of the island’s cold climate and geographic isolation. Historical depictions also show that Patrick wore blue rather than the green color now associated with St. Patrick’s Day. According to legend, he used the three-leaf shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity—the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Saint Patrick died on March 17, 461 AD, which is why his life and legacy are celebrated each year on that date.
