Saint John Jewish Historical Museum The museum will be open by appointment only from November 7, 2022 to May 23, 2023. Visitors will also be able to see the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue.

Monday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm, Sunday (July and August and cruise ship days), 1 pm to 4 pm The museum will reopen on May 23, 2023 through November 7, 2023 with regular hours from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm from Monday and Friday, additionally th

e doors will be open on Sunday afternoons from 1:00 to 4:00 pm during July and August. The feature exhibit for 2023 will be "Coming of Age: Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah Celebrations"" Additional exhibits are "From the Cradle to the Grave: Jewish Holy Days and Way of Life" and "Starting a New Life: Holocaust Survivors in New Brunswick". Museum admission fee of $5.00/adult or $10.00/family (2 parents and children up to age 16) . Appointments available for group tours, library research and education kits. Explore the Jewish history of Saint John through stories, photographs and artifacts.

On Wednesday, June 3, the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum hosted an event – A Celebration of Saint John Jewish Writers – as an in-person and Zoom event. We welcomed Diane Koven, Sandra Paikowsky, Jan Zatzman Orlansky, Ancil Kashetsky, Harry Rajchgot and Cheryl Everett Rajchgot to participate via Zoom. Ronald Davis was born December 13, 1929 and died on June 5, 1992. He was the only child of Eli and Bessie Davis. He was remembered as being an exceptional Hebrew School student and studied with Rabbi Beshkin in the 1940s. He was married to Mary Kiniski and is buried in the Schara Yzedeck Cemetery in New Westminster, BC.

Dorothy Gaum died on Saturday, June 20, 1998. She was born in Glace Bay, NS and was the daughter of Simon and Ethel Rosenblum. She had three sisters - Anita Dubinsky, Sarah Stober and Fannie Franklin - and four brothers - Moe, Max, Julius and Arthur. She was married to Harry Gaum for 58 years and they had a son, Simon and a daughter, Lois (Bessoudo). She was described as an avid reader, crossword puzzle enthusiast, and tireless volunteer for the IWK Children’s Hospital in Halifax.

Edythe Carole Freedman Steinberg died on June 11, 2025. She was born in Saint John and was the daughter of Rose (Selick) and John Jacob Freedman. She had a sister, Marcia (Jerry Koven), the founder of the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum, and two brothers, Lew (Ita) and Bernie (Natalie). Edythe, who graduated from nursing school in Brooklyn, New York, married Barry Steinberg, a native of Brooklyn and graduate of Dalhousie Medical School, on Dec. 20, 1959, at the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue. They settled in southeastern Massachusetts and raised two sons, Adam (Allison) and Jacques (Sharon). Among the many joys in her life were celebrating simchas with family, especially her four grandchildren – Alexandra, Jordan, Zachary and Hayden – and her many nieces and nephews.
