This talk examines the history of the modern crisis of understanding the human person and presents St.
John Paul Il's personalism as the Church's response. It traces how Western thought-from the Reformation through the Enlightenment to modern psychology-has sought to answer questions of freedom, identity, and meaning. In these troubled adolescent years of mankind, we often gained real insights but also fell into confusion about what it means to be human.
Rather than rejecting these developments, the Catholic tradition-especially through Vatican Il and John Paul Il-brings them to fulfillment by offering a deeper vision: the human person is not self-defining, purely autonomous, or reducible to inner drives-nor an object to be used-but a subject called to truth, love, and self-gift.
At its heart, the talk proclaims that Christ reveals us to ourselves, showing that true freedom is found not in self-assertion, but in the gift of self-because this is how we are made in the image of the Trinity.
