Saint Great Martyr George: A Symbol of Victory Over Evil
The life and suffering of the Saint Great Martyr George, who gave his life for the faith, remain an inexhaustible source of inspiration for believers. His feats soothe hearts and give strength to believe in the Victory of good over evil.
Life and Martyrdom for the Faith of Christ: Saint George Became a Symbol of Victory Over Persecution
On April 23 according to the Revised Julian calendar, we honor the memory of the Saint Great Martyr George, or Yuriy (Γεώργιος – the Greek equivalent of our name George). The Church honors him as the Victor – over evil, falsehood, and human fury.
He lived at the end of the 3rd century, during the reign of Emperor Diocletian, who was a pagan, a follower of idol worship, and a fierce persecutor of Christians. By birth, George was from Cappadocia, from a well-known Christian family. Still in childhood, he lost his father, who was tortured to death for the confession of the faith of Christ. And his mother with her young son moved to Palestine, because her homeland and rich estates were there.
As a youth, George entered military service and reached significant heights there: he was appointed a tribune (commander) in a prominent military regiment. And then even Emperor Diocletian himself, noticing the merits of the young man, honored him with the title of comes (a senior military commander who accompanied the emperor on travels) and voivode.
Being close to the emperor, George could not see and endure the imperial persecutions, harassments, and cruel executions of Christians. He distributed all his fortune to the poor, set his slaves free, and publicly proclaimed himself a Christian, publicly condemning the actions of the emperor. The cruel ruler did not forgive him for this.
The young Christian was subjected to martyric tortures, being called upon to renounce the faith of Christ in exchange for his life and a brilliant career. He was crushed with heavy stones, pierced with nails, broken on the wheel, his flesh was cut and torn, they tried to burn him… But with God's help, George remained alive and glorified Christ. Everyone who saw these miracles came to believe in the true God. And the emperor was very furious, because instead of being defeated, George, with his true faith and steadfastness, was essentially defeating him. Then the emperor ordered to cut off the martyr's head with a sword.
The Great Martyr was executed in Nicomedia in the year 303; he was not even 30 years old then. Therefore, on the icons of Saint George the Victorious, he is depicted as a youth with a beautiful face, who combines in himself the image of a warrior (in armor, with a shield, sword, and spear) and the symbols of martyrdom (a cross, a red cloak).
Holy Great Martyr George, pray to God for us!
