🪦 Everyone in Sackville recognizes these two stone pillars but do you know their story?

In our earliest cemetery records is a letter dated August 14, 1878:

“I hereby certify that Isaac B. Barnes has completed the two stone pillars to the Cemetery gateway in accordance with the plan & specifications.”

Barnes was a local mason hired to build two stone pillars for our entrance 148 years ago.

The cemetery accounts even preserve the work price: $57.10. Roughly $2,400 in today’s purchasing power, and about a month’s wages for a mason at the time.

But there’s a twist:

Later histories say the pillars standing today were installed during major landscaping in 1936. So what happened between 1878 and 1936? Were Barnes’ original pillars rebuilt? We don’t know… yet.

We do know the stone pillars, in some form, have marked this entrance since at least 1878, watching generations of Sackville families pass between them, from horse-drawn carriages to electric cars! 🚘

Mowing slows down, but fall cleanup picks up! 🍂

With 15 acres to care for, we start our fall cutbacks a little earlier than you might at home, selectively tidying plantings by priority.

Clearing spent growth protects the grass, improves airflow around monuments, reduces damp debris against stone, and keeps our equipment running smoothly.

🌿 A little seasonal care helps keep our cemetery beautiful and well maintained for everyone.

We escaped the cemetery! (But just for one day!) 😂📦📚

Today we reached a milestone we’re incredibly proud to share: in one afternoon, we helped preserve 162 years of our community’s history.

Of course, today was really the culmination of hundreds of hours of work sorting, identifying, conserving and creating thousands of digital records, spanning materials from the late 1700s to 2026.

Why does this matter? Simply put, historical information entrusted to the cemetery over generations can now be permanently preserved and protected at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick, helping ensure these records are never lost and remain available for generations to come.

This has truly been a team effort, made possible by the support of our Board, staff, students and volunteers. We are especially grateful to the Associates of the Provincial Archives / Associés des Archives provinciales for guiding us through this process, conserving fragile materials, and providing specialized digitization for oversized or delicate items we couldn’t safely digitize ourselves and to our local guides at Mount Allison University Libraries and Archives and Tantramar Heritage Trust for their support along the way.

There is still more work ahead, but today was a pretty special milestone. 162 years down and safely preserved for the future. ❤️

🍂 Pardon our mess! We’re already working on next year.

As October approaches, we slow down mowing and let the grass grow a little longer. As temperatures drop, growth naturally slows, and that extra leaf helps support healthy grass and roots heading into winter. 🌱

You may also spot some fresh soil like in the picture! The ground naturally settles over time, creating low spots that can become tripping hazards or troublesome for our equipment. We fill them now, let them settle over winter, then seed them in spring.

A little mess this fall = healthier, safer grounds next year! 🍁

An epic battle occurred at the cemetery today: Staff vs. Barberry. 😂🌿

Japanese barberry isn’t native and can be quite invasive… ask us how we know. 🥴

This vicious little plant grew with such determination it was actually pushing the monument over!

Today, its reign of terror ended. Roots pulled, stone levelled, and we’ll seed the area in spring.

Battle won… unless it sprouts back. 😬

What a difference careful stone cleaning can make! 🪦

Not every monument should be cleaned the same way. Modern granite, historic marble, sandstone and deteriorating stones can all require different approaches and the wrong method can cause permanent damage.

Sometimes good cemetery care means knowing when to clean, and when to leave a stone alone.

But when the materials and techniques are right, even a light cleaning can be very satisfying! 😊

🌸 A little colour for this rainy day!

Our hydrangeas are really showing off this time of year! With all this wet weather, mowing will have to wait until things dry out a little but we’ll be back at it as soon as conditions allow. In the meantime, the rain is giving the grounds a much-needed drink after a dry summer. 🌿

🍁 Why does it already feel like fall at the cemetery?

Many of our recent visitors to the cemetery have noticed and commented on the exact same thing: the leaves are falling unusually early this year.

And it turns out, we’re not imagining it!

Trees across our region are showing signs of stress from the hot, dry conditions this summer, causing some to shed their leaves much earlier than usual.

So if you’ve walked through the cemetery lately and wondered, “Why does it look like fall already?” you’re definitely not the only one! 🍂
