Dharma Drum Vancouver Center (DDVC) was founded by the renowned teacher and scholar of Chan Buddhism, Chan Master Sheng Yen. The history of the Center can be traced back to the venerable master’s first visit to Vancouver in 1994. At that time, a small group of practitioners gathered, and after his departure, they committed themselves to continuing to practice. Over the years, this small group grew
into a larger community, and the need of a new center became evident by 2004. After two years of construction, the new center began operating under the guidance of resident monastics in the Dharma Drum lineage of Chan Buddhism. We are located at 8240 No. 5 Road, a well-known multi-faith community in Richmond, south of Vancouver City. The Center is maintained by staff and volunteers who, together with our strong faculty of monastic and lay teachers, aim to provide a home for Buddhist practice and learning for everyone. Classes in meditation and Buddhist teachings, retreats ranging from one to seven days, ritual practice, drumming ensemble, reading circle, and family activities are offered all year round to meet your interests and needs. This is achieved through the three practices of ethical conduct, meditation, and cultivating compassion and wisdom.
