Thank goodness this has happened. Mental health is important for all and addressing issues like this is important, vital.
A Statement from Emmaus Mental Health Ministries: Affirming Dignity, Hope and Life
Emmaus Mental Health Ministries welcomes with gratitude today's announcement that the federal government intends to indefinitely halt the expansion of Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to those whose sole underlying medical condition is mental illness.
We believe deeply that every person living with mental health challenges possesses an inherent and immeasurable dignity. Every person is infinitely loved by God, and every life is worthy of care, compassion, hope and accompaniment.
Those who struggle with mental illness deserve ready access to quality mental healthcare, meaningful community supports, and the compassionate presence of others who will walk alongside them through life's challenges.
Our collective responsibility must be to foster resilience, support recovery, nurture hope, and uphold the dignity and right of every person to not merely survive, but to thrive.
We believe that the response to mental illness and psychological suffering must always be rooted in compassion, accessible care, and a commitment to life rather than government-sanctioned death.
As Mental Health Awareness Week continues, we invite everyone to join us in prayer for those who live daily with mental health challenges, and for the family members, friends, caregivers and communities who love, accompany and support them.
May we continue building communities where no one is left to struggle alone, where every person knows they are loved, and where hope is nurtured even in the most difficult circumstances.
Every life has dignity. Every person deserves hope. No one should have to walk alone.
