Our thoughts are prayers are with the Labonte family🙏🏻Mike and his family were a big part of the St. Mary’s community for many years! Prayers at St. Mary’s this Friday July 24th at 7:30pm and Funeral Mass is this Saturday July 25th at 11am at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

In Loving Memory of Michel Labonté

It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Michel “Mike” Labonté, 83, of Prince George, BC. Mike passed away at his home on Friday, July 17th, 2026.

Born Joseph André Wilfred Michel in Morinville, Alberta on September 19, 1942 to Lucien and Honorine Labonté, Mike was the fourth of eleven children. He moved to Prince George in the late ‘60s as a salesman for Gainers Meats. He married Kathleen Glasser July 11, 1970 and together they raised five children. He worked as a salesman and sales manager for Malkins and Sunspun Foods for over two decades, then operated his own catering and concession stand business.

He was a loving and devoted husband, father, and Pepère, as well as an active member of his church and community. He was a member of St. Mary’s parish for nearly six decades, led several fundraising campaigns for the Church and Elementary school, and was a proud contributing member of the Knights of Columbus.

He was also a driving force behind the growth of youth soccer in the city, first as a coach, then as a zone manager, and ultimately as the chair of Prince George Youth Soccer Association where he, in collaboration with his board, created the soccer fields now used by youth players across the city. One of the fields is named for him.

Mike is survived by his wife Kathleen, his daughters Michelle (Jack) and Karen, his sons Chris (Michelle), Daniel, and Mark (Roberta), as well as his grandchildren Paul, James, Sophie, Simon, Elliot, Megan, Owen, Juliet, and Jolene. He is also survived by his sisters Evangeline (Louis), Rogelle (Willie), Denise, Yvonne (Tom), and Marie (Gerry), and his brother Roger (Bernadette).
A prayer vigil will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 7.30 pm on Friday, July 24. His funeral service will be held at the Church at 11am on Saturday, July 25.

In Gratitude For The Journey,
In Hope For The Future

My dear friends, as we enter this transition week, I want to
thank each one of you for the kindness, patience, and faith you
have shown throughout these past months and during my
ministry at St. Mary’s. Change is never easy, yet you have
walked through it with grace — supporting one another,
encouraging one another, and carrying the spirit of St. Mary’s
with dignity and love.

This week marks a new beginning for all of us as our parish
family continues its journey within the wider communities of
Sacred Heart Cathedral and Christ Our Saviour Parish. Though
structures may change, our faith, friendships, and shared
memories remain strong. God has been guiding us gently, step
by step, and He will continue to lead us forward. As St. Vincent
Pallotti reminds us: “God’s grace is abundant for every step of
our journey.”

I am deeply grateful for your support over the last four years.
Your trust, prayers, and cooperation have been a blessing. You
welcomed me, encouraged me, and allowed me to serve you with
joy. As I prepare to take up my new responsibility at the
Cathedral, I carry your love and your faith with me.

My heartfelt thanks to the Parish Pastoral Council, Finance
Council, Knights of Columbus, Catholic Women’s League, and all
our ministers. Your dedication and generosity have kept our
parish vibrant, welcoming, and faithful.

Let us move forward with hope and open hearts. Scripture
assures us: “The Lord goes before you and will be with you; He
will never leave you nor forsake you.” This promise strengthens
us in every transition and every new beginning.

Through the loving intercession of Our Lady of Aparecida, may
the Lord bless each one of you with peace, courage, and grace.
May her maternal protection surround our parish family and
guide us into the future with faith, unity, and hope.

Yours in Christ,

Father Aruldhas Lucas
