In August Eppie shared this declaration, inspired by Richard Blanco's "Declaration of Interdependence" with the community.
[picture shows text that reads: Declaration of Interdependence, a poem written by Richard Blanco and modified by Eppie Burrell to reflect the Weird Church community. We are the cure for hatred
caused by despair.
We are the good morning from passersby as we sip coffee
at the local café.
We are the ones who help elderly people cross the street.
We are doors held open with a smile when we look into
each others eyes.
We are the ones whose hearts are gladdened when the
church bell rings.
We are the promise of one people, one breath declaring to one another:
I see you. I need you.
I am with you.]

...you’ll find warm welcomes,
familiar faces,
and new friendships waiting to begin.

Some people come for a meal. Many return because of the friendships they find along the way.

Behind these doors, there are opportunities to sit down, enjoy conversation and get to know others in our community.

Come as you are. There is a place here for you.

On August 31, International Overdose Awareness Day, all of us at Sunshine Coast Health Centre and Georgia Strait Women’s Clinic pause to honor the lives we have lost, stand alongside the families who carry grief every day, and recommit to a future built on compassion, healing, and hope.

Overdose does not discriminate. It touches every corner of our communities—affecting parents, children, partners, friends, and colleagues. Too often, the weight of shame and isolation stops people from reaching out when they need help the most.

Today serves as a powerful reminder: no one has to walk the path of recovery alone, and there is zero shame in seeking a way forward.

Remembering Without Stigma: We light a candle for every life ended too soon and hold space for the profound grief carried by loved ones.

Empowerment for Women: At Georgia Strait Women’s Clinic, we recognize the unique, gender-informed challenges women face with mental health and substance use, offering a safe space where healing can take root.

Holistic Recovery: At Sunshine Coast Health Centre and Georgia Strait Women’s Clinic our focus remains on restoring physical, mental, and spiritual well-being so individuals can reclaim purpose and connection.

How You Can Make a Difference Today

- Carry Naloxone: Learn the signs of an overdose and carry a harm-reduction kit. You could save a life.
- Change the Conversation: Speak openly about addiction as a health condition, eliminating the stigma that keeps people silent.
- Reach Out: If you or someone you love is struggling, make the call. Help is always available.

Today, we wear purple to show that every life is valued, every story matters, and recovery is always possible.

Need support? Connect with our team today to learn about our evidence-based, compassionate residential programs for men and women.
