Starting Afresh: Finding Mercy
The beginning of a new year often awakens a desire for a clean slate. We reflect on what has been, recognize what has gone wrong, and quietly hope for a fresh start. Scripture assures us that such a new beginning is not only possible—it is God’s gracious invitation.
The Lord speaks tenderly in Isaiah: “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” God does not minimize sin, but He also does not leave us trapped in it. He invites us to “settle the matter,” to come honestly before Him and receive cleansing that only He can give.
Proverbs reminds us that concealment leads to spiritual stagnation, but confession leads to mercy. Sin hidden hardens the heart; sin confessed opens the way to blessing. David echoes this truth in Psalm 32, describing the heavy burden of unconfessed sin and the deep relief that came when he finally said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” Forgiveness brought freedom, restored strength, and renewed joy.
This mercy is fully revealed in Jesus. When the paralyzed man was brought to Him, Jesus addressed the deepest need first: “Take heart, son; your sins are forgiven.” Before healing the body, Christ healed the soul. Forgiveness is not a distant hope—it is a present gift for all who come to Him in faith.
As you begin this year, hear God’s invitation. Do not carry yesterday’s guilt into tomorrow. Come honestly. Confess freely. Receive mercy fully. In Christ, forgiveness opens the door to a truly fresh start—one marked by freedom, gratitude, and renewed devotion to God.
Blessings and we’ll hope to see you this Sunday January 4th and throughout this New Year!
