The biggest sleeper issue of the federal election is flying under the radar—and it could wipe out 40% of Canada’s 85,600 charities.

Last December, the Liberal-led Finance Committee recommended removing charitable status from religious organizations—without consulting them. Only Conservatives opposed it.

The report calls for stripping the advancement of religion as a charitable purpose from the Income Tax Act.

No consultation. No rationale. Just the advice of one group: the BC Humanist Association.

What’s at stake?
• $1.6–$2.6 billion in tax relief that supports food banks, shelters, mental health support, refugee programs & more.
• Donation receipts gone. GST exemptions gone.
• Some charities could lose everything—even their property.

A Cardus study found religious organizations return 10X the value they receive in tax relief. If their charitable status is revoked, Canadians lose $16.5 billion in services.

This is not just a religious issue. It’s a freedom of belief, community support, and basic fairness issue.

Canadians can stop this. But they need to know it’s happening. Search this topic on Google.

Religious congregations in Canada provide vital community services—from addiction recovery and refugee support to food banks and childcare—while also stimulating local economies through events and direct spending. For every dollar spent by a congregation, the community receives an average of $3.39 in socio-economic value, totaling over $18 billion in benefits in 2019 alone.

Only Conservatives opposed this attack.
Let’s bring common sense—and compassion—back to Ottawa.
