Today, Pope Leo XIV returned to Genazzano, the Augustinian shrine he visited just two days after his election to the Chair of Peter. Before celebrating Holy Mass, the Pope offered a Golden Rose to the image of Our Lady of Good Counsel, on the eve of the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is a Marian image deeply connected to his own spiritual journey: Pope Leo frequented the shrine as a young student in Rome in the early 1980s, and later returned there many times as Prior General of the Augustinian Order. A simple but powerful gesture in a place tied to his vocation, his religious family and his devotion to Mary: Pope Leo entrusting his ministry once again to Our Lady of Good Counsel.

“The family is the mirror in which God sees Himself.” Pope Leo XIV greeted mothers, fathers, and children gathered in the Vatican Gardens for the Feast of Families, recalling these beautiful words of St. John Paul II. Then he added a simple and powerful reminder: in your family, God is present.
Even in the struggles, the noise, the tiredness, and the imperfect days, the family remains a place where God continues to give life and love.
“God wants to see Himself in our community, in our family. God is present in your family,” the Pope said.
Quoting St. John Paul II again, Pope Leo recalled the two greatest miracles God sees in the family: “giving life” and “giving love.”
A tender and profound message for every family: you are not just schedules, responsibilities, and problems to solve. You are a miracle where God lives, loves, and allows Himself to be seen.
“I want to thank all of you, your families, for this great miracle that you are.”

Pope Leo XIV expressed his closeness to Ukrainians after recent attacks on cities and civilian infrastructure killed innocent people. During his Sept. 6 Angelus, he renewed his appeal to end the violence and pursue dialogue, peace and diplomacy.
