“I messed up.”

Those words spoken by an air traffic controller minutes after an Air Canada plane collided with a fire truck are haunting. That same week, last week, my 24-year-old son passed his commercial pilot’s licence test – yay Stanley!! He’s a long way away from flying for a major airline; nevertheless, this accident hits a little closer to home.

Those charged with analyzing the plane collision tragedy are quick to point out the fault is not just with one person even with a verbal admission of guilt: there are a multitude of factors and systems that contributed to that moment.

My heart breaks for the families of the pilots who lost their lives. My heart breaks for that air traffic controller. My heart breaks for so much pain in this world.

“Were you there when they crucified my Lord?”

The powerful African American spiritual places us at the scene, at the crucifixion … maybe as faithful followers but maybe as a soldier of the empire, a judging religious leader, one in the crowd swept up in the spectacle.

This week we walk the road that will lead to the foot of the cross. If we are honest and self-aware, we can’t help but say “I messed up”, “we messed up.”

“Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.”

Jesus, forgive me. Jesus, forgive us. Forgive me for what I have done and what I have failed to do. Forgive us for being part of and blind to systems of racism, injustice, systems that support war instead of peace. This week give me courage to see your suffering and your great love. In the shadow of the cross help us to really see the pain and suffering in this world and to witness your great love that compelled you to go to and through the cross. Amen.

A Prayer with the Community of Tumbler Ridge, BC

Providing God,
With people across the country and around the world,
we seek your care as we bear witness to the mass shooting in the community of Tumbler Ridge.
Provide solace for all affected.
Provide comfort to those overwhelmed by grief.
Provide compassionate strength to those who are providing support to the broken-hearted.

Providing God,
guide us, as we continue to the build the world you have imagined:
A world where a child's right to learn, laugh, love and live is cherished and protected in every village – everywhere;
A world without violence;
A world where the most vulnerable among us feel safe, cherished and protected, always.

For the sake of Christ who entrusted us to each other,
may it be so.
Amen.
