Today's Gospel Reading for the 14th Sunday of Matthew (Ἐκ τοῦ Κατὰ Ματθαῖον 22:2-14)

The Lord said this parable, "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who gave a marriage feast for his son, and sent his servants to call those who were invited to the marriage feast; but they would not come. Again he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those who are invited, Behold, I have made ready my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves are killed, and everything is ready; come to the marriage feast.' But they made light of it and went off, one to his farm, another to his business, while the rest seized his servants, treated them shamefully, and killed them. The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The wedding is ready, but those invited were not worthy. Go therefore to the thoroughfares, and invite to the marriage feast as many as you find.' And those servants went out into the streets and gathered all whom they found, both bad and good; so the wedding hall was filled with guests.

But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment; and he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and cast him into the outer darkness; there men will weep and gnash their teeth.' For many are called, but few are chosen."

Εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην· Ὡμοιώθη ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἀνθρώπῳ βασιλεῖ, ὅστις ἐποίησε γάμους τῷ υἱῷ αὐτοῦ. Καὶ ἀπέστειλε τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ καλέσαι τοὺς κεκλημένους εἰς τοὺς γάμους, καὶ οὐκ ἤθελον ἐλθεῖν. Πάλιν ἀπέστειλεν ἄλλους δούλους λέγων· Εἴπατε τοῖς κεκλημένοις· ἰδοὺ τὸ ἄριστόν μου ἡτοίμασα, οἱ ταῦροί μου καὶ τὰ σιτιστὰ τεθυμένα, καὶ πάντα ἕτοιμα· δεῦτε εἰς τοὺς γάμους. οἱ δὲ ἀμελήσαντες ἀπῆλθον, ὃς μὲν εἰς τὸν ἴδιον ἀγρόν, ὃς δὲ εἰς τὴν ἐμπορίαν αὐτοῦ· οἱ δὲ λοιποὶ κρατήσαντες τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ ὕβρισαν καὶ ἀπέκτειναν. Ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐκεῖνος ὠργίσθη, καὶ πέμψας τὰ στρατεύματα αὐτοῦ ἀπώλεσε τοὺς φονεῖς ἐκείνους καὶ τὴν πόλιν αὐτῶν ἐνέπρησε. Τότε λέγει τοῖς δούλοις αὐτοῦ· ῾Ο μὲν γάμος ἕτοιμός ἐστιν, οἱ δὲ κεκλημένοι οὐκ ἦσαν ἄξιοι· πορεύεσθε οὖν ἐπὶ τὰς διεξόδους τῶν ὁδῶν, καὶ ὅσους ἐὰν εὕρητε καλέσατε εἰς τοὺς γάμους. Εἰσελθὼν δὲ ὁ βασιλεὺς θεάσασθαι τοὺς ἀνακειμένους εἶδεν ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπον οὐκ ἐνδεδυμένον ἔνδυμα γάμου, καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ· Ἐταῖρε, πῶς εἰσῆλθες ὧδε μὴ ἔχων ἔνδυμα γάμου; ῾Ο δὲ ἐφιμώθη. Τότε εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τοῖς διακόνοις· Δήσαντες αὐτοῦ πόδας καὶ χεῖρας ἄρατε αὐτὸν καὶ ἐκβάλετε εἰς τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον· ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων. 🔸 August 30 - Saint Alexander of Constantinople 🔸

Today, we commemorate Saint Alexander the Archbishop of Constantinople. He lived during the reign of Saint Constantine the Great, and was a prominent figure at the First Ecumenical Synod of Nicaea in 325 AD which condemned the A***n heresy. St Alexander was born in Calabria around 240 AD. At a young age, he dedicated himself to God in a monastery where he cultivated the virtues of prayer and fasting.

He was later ordained a priest, and in the early 4th century he was appointed to serve as the vicar to St Metrophanes, the Archbishop of Byzantium. The aging Metrophanes sent Alexander to represent him at the First Ecumenical Council. At the council, Alexander defended the Orthodox position that Christ is of one essence with the Father, and is coeternal and consubstantial with Him.

An angel of the Lord later appeared to the weary Metrophanes and instructed him that he should choose Alexander as his successor. Having confirmed his successor, St Metrophanes reposed, and Alexander succeeded him in 326 as Archbishop of Byzantium. St Alexander is considered the first Archbishop of Constantinople, since it was during his episcopacy that the city Byzantium was officially renamed Constantinople (“the city of Constantine”) in the year 330.

According to tradition, sometime after the Council of Nicaea, the deposed heretic Arius agreed to return to communion with the Church. When the Emperor Constantine asked him to swear his faith in the Nicene Creed, it is said that he cunningly placed his hand over his heart (but actually over a document of his own heretical creed concealed in his breast pocket) and said “This is what I believe!”.

St Constantine, unaware of the deceitful wickedness of Arius, set a day for him to be officially received back into the Church. Perceiving that Arius was feigning repentance, St Alexander prayed all night long, imploring the Lord not to permit him to be received by the Church. As it happened, Arius died in 336 on his way to the church, before he could be received back into communion. St Alexander reposed in 337, aged close to 100.

On Thursday, August 27, we honor Saint FANOURIOS (Phanourios) the Martyr and Miracle Worker! ✨Χρόνια Πολλά✨

St. Fanourios is one of the saints that we ask to intercede for us when we lose things. His name is from the Greek word “fanerono” which means I reveal. 🙏

Saint Fanourios was unknown until the 14th century when his icon was found among ruins on the island of Rhodes, Greece 🇬🇷. The icon depicted the young Phanourios as a soldier, holding a candle. Around the border of the icon, twelves scenes depicted his martyrdom for Christ.

The faithful pray to Saint Fanourios to help them find lost objects, new jobs, health and happiness. Each year, he is honored by a symbolic cake (‘Phanouropita’) baked in his name and blessed in the church ⛪️.

Filotimo is more than a word. It is a way of life.

It is the essence of our spirit, the heart of our culture, and a beautiful part of what makes Greece… Greece. 🇬🇷💙

Thy Martyrs, O Lord, in their courageous contest for Thee received as the prize the crowns of incorruption and life from Thee, our immortal God. For since they possessed Thy strength, they cast down the tyrants and wholly destroyed the demons' strengthless presumption. O Christ God, by their prayers, save our souls, since Thou art merciful.

Ἐκ τοῦ Κατὰ Ματθαῖον 18:23-35 Εὐαγγελίου τὸ Ἀνάγνωσμα

The Lord said this parable: "The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the reckoning, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents; and as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, 'Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.' And out of pity for him the lord of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But that same servant, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and seizing him by the throat he said, 'Pay what you owe.' So his fellow servant fell down and besought him, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you.' He refused and went and put him in prison till he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. Then his lord summoned him and said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you besought me; and should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?' And in anger his lord delivered him to the torturers, till he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart."
