This week, Fr. Jerry will join the priests of the Diocese of Peterborough for their annual Priests’ Retreat.

A retreat is an important time of prayer, silence, reflection, and spiritual renewal. Just as we all need moments to step back from the busyness of life and reconnect with the Lord, priests too benefit from time set aside to pray, listen, reflect, and be renewed for the ministry entrusted to them.

Please keep Fr. Jerry, Bishop Miehm, and all of our diocesan priests in your prayers this week. Pray that this retreat may be a time of renewal, encouragement, and deeper closeness to Christ, so that they may continue serving God’s people with faithful and generous hearts.

Please be assured that our parish community, your families, and your intentions will be remembered in prayer throughout the retreat.

“Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.” (Mark 6:31)

When we ask God to reveal our vocation, He answers.

Not always all at once.
Not always clearly at first.

But He leads.
He speaks.
He invites.

Prayer is where we learn to listen.

Jesus, I trust in you.

Save the date! The Roman Catholic Diocese of Peterborough is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the first Mass known to have been celebrated in Peterborough this June, and has arranged for a Bicentennial Mass and Procession to take place on Sunday, June 7 at 10:30am at St. Peter-in-Chains Cathedral to commemorate the occasion. The Mass will be held with the Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Ivan Jurkovič and Archbishop Michael Mulhall of the Diocese of Kingston.

This historical event is significant to the Peter Robinson Emigration, as most of the emigrants were Catholic and would have attended this Mass, celebrated by Father Ahearn on June 5, 1825 in Government House, Peter Robinson's headquarters at the corner of Simcoe and Water Streets. After they had settled into their new home, one of their next priorities, as expressed in their address to Governor General Maitland during his visit to the Peterborough area, was for priests "for the consolations of our holy religion." This request was accommodated and before long both the Roman Catholic Diocese of Peterborough and St. Peter-in-Chains Cathedral (built thanks to the hard work of the emigrants themselves) were established.

If you're curious to learn more about the importance of faith to the Peter Robinson emigrants and the history of the Diocese and of St. Peter-in-Chains Cathedral, we highly encourage you to check out the two-part interview with Father Tom Lynch, Rector at the Cathedral, on our YouTube Channel.

Retired priests have spent years ministering to our parish communities, offering guidance, support, and the sacraments. Now it's our turn to show our appreciation and ensure they are cared for in their retirement years. Your support of the Special Collection for the Priest Benefit Fund on June 13/14 will directly assist retired priests of our diocese with their essential needs, ensuring they can live with dignity as vital members of our community. The month of May often sees many ordinations scheduled, and as a result, also sees many ordination anniversaries of our priests! While not every priest was ordained in May, a good number have been. Do you know your parish priest's ordination anniversary? It's a good idea to wish him a happy anniversary and to offer prayers and support as he marks another year in service to the Lord!

Pictured here is from the ceremony of ordination of priests, where the men to be ordained priests lie prostrate before the altar while the assembly chants the Litany of the Saints, invoking their intercession and help for the future priests.

Today the Church celebrates Good Shepherd, recognizing Jesus as the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for the sheep. Jesus loved us so much that he went to the cross for our redemption. By following Jesus, we, the sheep, are led to salvation and come to know Him as the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).

After His Ascension, Jesus also leaves the Apostles as shepherds to lead the Church on earth, with them passing down their apostolic mission down through the ages in the ministry of bishops and priests. Today, let us pray for our shepherds who lead us and let us pray the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers for the harvest so that we may always have shepherds to lead us to the Shepherd (Matt 9:38). Let us pray for vocations to the priesthood so that we may always have shepherds to give us the sacraments and Word of God.

This weekend, we celebrate the World Day of Prayer for Vocations.

Pope Leo XIV, in his message for this day, wrote, “I invite everyone –– in families, parishes and religious communities, as well as bishops, priests, deacons, catechists, educators and all the faithful –– to commit themselves more fully to creating conditions that allow this gift to be embraced, nourished, protected and accompanied, so that it may bear abundant fruit. Only when our surroundings are illumined by living faith, sustained by constant prayer and enriched by fraternal accompaniment can God’s call blossom and mature, becoming a path of happiness and salvation for individuals and for the world. By embarking on the path that Jesus, the Good Shepherd, shows us, we come to know more deeply both ourselves and the God who calls us.”

This is the mission of Vocation Ministry. We help dioceses, parishes, and schools create this good, fertile soil for vocations to blossom. Find out how you can participate at www.vocationministry.com.

Please pray fervently for more holy vocations.
