pastor Devlin will often will often put a written devotion with his videos. I know we all do not have time to read or do not take time to read, but I really like this one and I felt it was important enough to put on the page.
Vision’s Birthplace The horizon principal
The Tension Between Here & There
There is a trap that all of us face when life gets heavy. It is the temptation to look at our current circumstances the grind, the challenges, the roadblocks…. and a thought grows, "I guess this is just the way things are always going to be."
This compromises vision. Taking our eyes off the vision, to settle into ‘survival mode’.
But true vision isn't born in a vacuum of perfect conditions. It is actually birthed right in the middle of our current difficulties and challenges. It comes from a place of ‘holy discontentment’. Please don’t mistake this for being ungrateful. You can fully appreciate the family, life, and blessings God has given you, while still feeling that deep, quiet inner nudge that there’s more to your journey.
God has given every single one of us a unique assignment, an upward call, and something specific to build for Him.
The struggle is learning how to live in "the gap" that space between our current reality and the ultimate “gain” our vision. Refusing to let the reality swallow the vision up.
The Bible:
The Apostle Paul understood the friction of the gap perfectly. Writing from the stark reality of a prison cell, he refused to let his current environment dictate his divine trajectory:
"Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:13–14 (NKJV)
Three Truths to Carry Today
To make sure we don't look back a year from now and realize we've just been managing fires rather than moving forward, we have to look logically at how vision interacts with our daily reality.
1. Vision Requires Honest Coordinates
You cannot map a route to a new destination if you refuse to admit where you are currently standing. True vision doesn't ignore reality or pretend challenges don't exist. It requires us to look honestly at our struggles, our fatigue, or our constraints, and say, "This is where I am starting, but it is not where I am staying." Challenge your current reality; don't just accept it.
2. The Jesus Pattern: Vision in Action
When Jesus walked the earth, He confronted a heavy reality poverty, sickness, and systemic brokenness. Yet, He never let that reality shrink His vision of the Kingdom of God. Instead, He used His words to describe the vision and His deeds to prove it. He showed us that the vision isn't a distant fantasy; it's a present responsibility. We bridge the gap when we match our belief with tangible, daily actions.
3. Reject the Image of Permanence
The greatest lie of a difficult season is that it is permanent. When we accept the status quo, we stop praying through the challenges and start just coping with them. Paul said he had NOT "apprehended" he hadn't arrived yet, and neither have we. The moment we think we've reached our limit is the moment we stop thriving.
Moving Forward Today
I don’t know exactly what specific challenges or fires you are walking through today, but I know what it’s like to feel the weight of the daily grind pulling your eyes down to the dirt.
Today, let’s make a deliberate choice to refuse to stay stuck in the gap. Do not let the current atmosphere dictate your altitude. Keep the grand vision God gave you firmly in mind. Don't look back at past failures or old ways of doing things. Instead, face the friction of today head-on, grab hold of your tools, and pray through the challenges.
God has put a calling on your life, and the vision is right there. Let's stop surviving, start thriving, and press on.
God bless you.
